My sherman GB project
Posted by M1abramsRules on Monday, April 5, 2004 9:29 AM
here's the m10 I did for the sherman group build. its the academy m10. it depicts the one man stand by audie murphy. I still have to put a smoke generator in it, and I am going to put a bit of damage on it too, probably a shell hole somewhere. the snow is hairspray and baking soda.

Wow, that looks great!
The snow on the vehicle is extremely well done. The photos have a very realistic look to them.

The only constructive criticism I might offer is that the figure (that'd be Audie, eh?) seems to lack depth. Maybe a wash or two, or some shading and highlighting of the folds on the clothing might bring more depth to it. I'm no figure expert, so I can't really offer much technical advice there!

Also, if that's the permament base, you might want to set the vehicle into the snow a little more. It's kinda floating on top of it now, without a lot of positive contact with the ground.

Nonetheless, an excellent work!

that's no permament base, that's our garden. Big Smile [:D] yeah, I'll probably put a bit more work on the figure. I'm just not that good at painting figures.

Hah! The garden! That explains it.
Well, when you do put it on a base, make sure it sits on there solidly.

I didn't mean the figure looked bad, just that it lacked some depth. Mine have the same problem.
That's why I rarely do figures!
I'm too chicken!

Makes me wanna go and bake cookies and do my hair .....hehe looks great !!!personally all the figure would need is some dry brushing .That really makes the texture of their clothing stand out.

Very nice work Chris. The snow looks real icy. Ah, the old Tamiya .50 cal AA Gunner.....brings back memories.

Looks great as is Chris, but can I give a couple more constructive criticms than what have been raised. The Driver and Radio operator's hatches sit up very high on the M10 when open - almost in line with the Glacis plate. Why they did that I will never know, 'cause you can't open them with the turret facing forward and most of the time these guys went back and up the turret to get out. Anyway, your's are noticibaly too horizontal. See these pics for the idea.

The other thing, have you thought about drilling out the headlamps? I use a small diameter drill bit first, and work my way up sizes, so that you don't stretch or break the kit part., then paint the inside chrome (looks better than silver) and then fill with 5 minute clear epoxy. Looks just like the real thing. Do it before the final weathering so a bit of 'dust' on the lens blends it in with the rest of the vehicle. If you want you can even put a wire filiment inside the larger ones.

Lastly, the snow packed around the rear exhaust ports would probably have melted from the heat (same as the snow on the engine deck). Even if the vehicle had been parked for a while there would be no snow so close to the exhausts due to the hull overhang, but then more snow would have fallen on top of the vehicle too.

Just a couple of small things to help. I hope I don't sound like I am being nasty.

I love con criticism petbat, its what makes me better. never thought about the exhaust melting the snow back there. The hatch is easily fixed.

The snow technique is from domi and his daughter tena. I sprayed the hairspray on and then sprinkled the baking soda. I'll put more on once I get it on a vignette (of sorts)

Chris as I have said before it looks great. The snow is perfect. I think that's how I'm going to do the snow on mine.
I was up till 2:00am on Saturday working on mine to make it presentable for a show. I took my M10 and my Sherman from the group build they both came home with silver medals.
I'm going to have to see what I can do about the hatches as petbat pointed out, that just the way Acadmey made them I guess.
When I get a picture I'll post it for you.
Trevor Where am I going and why am I in this handbasket?

Looking real good Chris! Love the snow. Perhaps could give your poor GI some gloves, too. (Just paint his hands brown!)
Love the "base" too. Hope it warms up there soon. Still in shorts down in the south, so don't hold your breath!

Matt

P.S. Don't tell Robert, but I really like the Sherman based tank destroyers, and have often thought of buying one. Actually, don't tell any of the German armour guys either......

Lovely model Bow [bow]!
Love the snow. Just one thing shouldn't he have something warm on? With all that snow it's bound to be pretty cold. He looks as if he's only wearing standard summer uniform.

michael, I painted a length of copper wire gold and then cut a bunch of small pieces from it. works great. they are also held on by hairspray.
