What's the right sequence?
Posted by JB623 on Thursday, December 19, 2019 2:30 PM

Hello

I am (very) new to the armor modelling hobby & forum. Would like improve my skills.

Curently struggling with right sequence of steps, when it comes to painting, weathering, finishing, etc.

1. Build the tank

2. Paint the tank (Tamiya acrylics; airbrushed)

? Do decals go on next?

? Should any type of 'finish' be applied next?  (what is best finish to use?)

? Is weathering applied now? I am experimenting with Vallejo to try some pin wash and some dry brushing.

Is there a recommended sequence for these steps?

Appreciate any feedback. I know this is modelling basics 101; but may as well learn from the best.

Cheers

Youtube is your friend for learning differnt building methods. But, when you do decals put down a GLOSS coat, then decals, then GLOSS coat again. Then you can weather or whatever floats your boat. If you put decals over matte finish they will "silver" and look ghastly. There are a ton of ways to build. Do what suits you, try different things and go with what you like. Don't worry about failing, that's learning.

Basic building steps.

Build

Paint

Decal

Weather

Finish work

Show it off and ask for ideas. Each piece is unique, but the basics are always the same.

Build

Paint

*Gloss coat with a finish that is impervious to whatever weathering technique you will follow with. In other words, if you plan to weather with spirits, gloss coat with acrylic. Or vice versa.

Decal

Weather

*Flat coat.

Finish work

Modeling is an excuse to buy books.

Sometimes building and painting need to be varied.Depending on the build, you may need to assemble a little, paint a little, assemble a little.Read ahead, get the full picture, sometimes there are different ways to approach a kit.

Tojo is right it can be different ever time considering the type of model and how you want it to look. I'm so new and I've found that it's different every time. I've fo myself skipping to other places so I can paint and have it dry then play catch up. The more you build the more you'll understand how something should go. Good luck. I'm having trouble with weathering and washes. Using oil paints as a wash. It's a hair puller for me.

Thanks. I get it about the assembly. I do the same thing jumping around to get pieces built and then paint them all at same time. The weathering is definitely a challenge, I agree.
