Bumper codes
Posted by M1GarandFan on Thursday, January 9, 2020 1:28 PM

This topic has been discussed before, but I'm going to start again.

It feels and looks like the Ardennes here in Western Colorado, and I'm rereading "A time for Trumpets by Charles B. McDonald, so as I am working on a jeep kit, I thought I might mark it as belonging to the I&R platoon of the 394th Infantry, 99th ID, led by Lt. Lyle Bouck.

They had jeep with them at their position outside of Lanzerath, Belgium. I'm pretty sure the beginning of the bumper code would be:

99-I 394-I.       My question is whether the next code would be "I&R 1" or "HQ" with a number after the hq? The I&R platoon was assigned to the hq company of the regiment, so I'm not sure which would be right, or something entirely different. Thanks to anyone who might be able to help with this.

Usually, the right side (when looking at them) bumper code is Company and vehicle number; so HQ sounds right to me.  No idea what the vehicle number would be though as HQ 1 would usually be assigned to the the Regimental S1 (personnel) officer.  Maybe HQ 2xx or something like that as it would/could be assigned to the Regimental S2 (intel) section?

That makes some sense to me. My research shows that in the HQ Company, the admin section had 5 vehicles, the Comm platoon had 9 vehicles, and then the I&R platoon had 1 HQ jeep and the 2 Recon squads had 3 jeeps each. By my reckoning that might make the I&R HQ jeep number 15, assuming they are numbered consecutively including any trucks. Yeah, I know what assuming makes me!
