Russian Matilda II External Fuel Drum
Posted by Bill Clarke on Monday, February 10, 2020 9:51 PM

Hi All,

I'm building S Models 1/72 Matilda II in Russian service.

Having looked online at various examples, I'm modifying it with a 200 litre fuel drum on the rear deck, behind the turret, and deleting the factory fitted circular external tank they carried and was plumbed to the engine and sat in cradles on the rear wall above the exhausts.

My question, how were the 200 litre drums tied down?

Did they use chains or ropes, and if so, to what did they attach them?

Thanks guys,

Bill.

This well-known photo appears in Russian Tanks of WWII, MBI Pub., page 148, with the caption; ..."fuel drum tied to the hull." It appears to be tied with rope.

Looking at this Matilda walkaround, it looks like you could tie the drum to the bars of the hinges of the engine grates or around the grates themselves.

There is also a rear-facing lifting hook on the grates.
