Hun,,,, From what I can find Mostly they did,, However you can Find Pictures of them in Gray coveralls early in the war and also Cammo uniforms later in the war. But on the whole tho if you paint them in a black uniform you usually cant go wrong. Hope this helps.

Not only the tank commander uniform but also armoured troops NCO uniform remains black trough out the war. There are a few changes to the colar and thats about it. But during the winter of 1944 you often see tank crews wearing the camuflage uniform.

Generally, the later you go in the war, the more variation you get. Black Panzer tunics, Field Gray Tunics, Reed Green uniforms, various Heer splinter-pattern camouflage jackets, Italian camo material, black U-boat leather jackets, splinter-pattern coveralls, and even the mouse-gray wool undershirt was sometimes outfitted with insignia and worn when in shirtsleeve order during the summer. Then there is SS Panzer clothing, which is a whole different story.

Assault gun guys on the other hand rarely wore black. They almost always wore gray or green uniforms. Late in the war most bets are off though.

The summer-weight, field-green uniform of drill material was introduced for armored car crews in May 1941. It proved popular in hot weather and was soon issued to crews of all kinds of AFVs. I have a color photo of a Tank-Destroyer NCO, Russia, 1943-44, in this uniform if you want it.

Dark or black is early, Camo is late.
