An old friend arrived

Yesterday I got my first of three H.B. models of the XM-706E2 armored car, sometimes called the pig, Duck, or Rubber Duck (we think after the song "Rubber Duckie", but not sure).

I opened it and was glad to find out that the new sprues will save me a lot of time not having to scratch build the sloped parapit armor and blast shields our vehicles had.

It also includes parts from the the Army version, commonaly called the V-100 and its M-60 gun turret.  It looks like there will be parts for different versions included again.  I will have to get back to this later due to a appointment I have to go to.

That's great! Hope you post some photos when you get around to building her.

Thm actually, I plan on doing three, one in green, one in the normal camoflahe, and one in a black and green cammo pattern we got from another squadron.

Ok, here's what's in the box.  A sheet that covers a few of the new parts, mostly P.E.  The sheet shows a 5 gallon can mounted on the rear, not far from the rear hatchas well as a tool rack not far away.  We never used the gas can because the vehicles stayed on the base except in very rare situations.  I don't even remember having the tool racks mounted for the same reason, so my models.

The colors called for on the sheet are wrong as far as I know with the exception of the all green version.  Normally the camo pattern was pretty much the same as you would find on a fighter, two greens and a tan.I visited all the based in our area and never saw the colors they suggest.  The stencils could be either black or white, depending on who put them on at the time.

The first set of parts cover the Air Force version, which will save me a lot of time, but it looks like I will have to add the blast door handles and hinges as well as the following track paths.  They have added the engine compartment panels as well.  This too is a nice touch that will save some time.

The next set of parts has the correct driver hatches, tire rims, hatches and other parts including the Army turret parts and some other small detail parts.

The next set has an assortment of interior parts including the seats that I will be modifying into the correct configuration, the center consol and engine exhaust area along with the back of the rims.

Next is a pack of two sets of parts covering some of the suspention, more cas cans, turret parts and other small parts.

Next we come to a assortment of hatches and doors, some for other versions of the Commando family.

Now comes a collectionof suspension parts, doors, tools, and a updated versionof teh M-60 machinegun that came out after teh war and was meant to be used on a different version.

When it comes to the hull, it's the same as the other versions.  The floor has sink marks and is stenciled for the V-150 version.  If you are going to show a opened version a floor panel will have to be made.

Clear parts are provided for the headlights, tail lights and vision ports.  The vision ports should be tinted gree.  I find a clear green workd well here.Like on some of the other sprues, there is something for a more advanced version of this vehicle.

The kit somes with a small set of photo etch including M-60 bi-pods and the grills to cover the headlights.

Decals are provided in white, which I had some trouble in reading.  If somebody can make some in black with some extra different last three serial numbers, I would appreciate that.  All the Air Force combat vehicles had the year, weight class, and last three of its number, such as 69K811 and like that, located on both sides and the back.

As for some of the things I intend to do is add teh padded panels to the various hull locations, modify the seats, add one seat to the right front across from teh driver, some details for teh knob on the gunports as well as the inside port shield, a couple interior lights that i will have to get from a M-113 P.E. set.  I may add a whinch assembly  and its cable and hook, or at least some cable and the hook.  There was also a bilge pump exhaust on the upper right side of the vehicle, if I remember correctly, I'll have to check on that.  With one exception we never took them into the bay, and that one person forgot to check for the plugs in the bottom of the hull.

I may do this to one of my kits, I think it was a squadron modification for monsoon season.
