Asuka Type 74 tank - questions
Posted by Wild Bill on Monday, November 16, 2020 11:13 AM

This Tamiya kit is a gem; I've had one for many years hoping for some detail up parts to finally build it.  A couple of years ago it was re-released by Asuka of Japan, but not imported to the US.  I've seen some advertised with a separate individual link track set, not part of the Asuka release.  In short, I'd like to know the difference between the Asuka release and the Tamiya original issue kit; I was under the impression that Asuka tooled some new parts for the kit.  Can anyone give me some guidance here?  Thank you.

I think the Asuka kit had a few new parts to update the kit, and also included clear vision blocks.  Modelkasten made plastic indy link track, but there might be others made from metal.  Personally, I'd go with the metal option if it is available, as the Type 74 tracks are of the saggy dry pin variety, and it did not have rubber track shoes.  It's just that metal is way more durable than plastic when it comes to weathering and handling.

It's a neat looking tank, like a flat M60.  I have a later Tamiya issue in the stach which includes skis and a commander figure with a face covering that makes him look like a Cobra baddie from GI Joe!
