Tamiya 1/35 Tiger II Pre-Production Turret Finished ***Better Photos 6/7***
Posted by GreySnake on Thursday, January 7, 2021 5:58 PM
This Tamiya kit has been in progress since early last year.  I’ve never been confident in my zimmerit skills and an old set of Cavalier zimmerit was used. The Cavalier set had some problems the upside being I finally got passable at doing my own zimmerit with epoxy putty to fix the fit problems. Apart from the zimmerit the only other AM is PE for the engine deck screens. Finally decided it was time to get this model off the shelf last month and finish it. Here is where I’m at right now.

The kit was painted with Tamiya XF-88, XF-89 and XF-90 over a black shadow coat. This tank doesn’t belong to any unit that I know of and made up the camouflage scheme.  The weathering has mainly been focused on the lower hull for right now. I used mainly Ammo products to dirty the lower hull and tracks. I wanted to go for a dried mud look and not overdo the mud. A graphite pencil was used to make polished metal where the road wheels would contact with the tracks.

Edit: I forgot to state the model is far from finished. There’s still a lot of weathering to do on the upper hull chipping, streaking, fuel stains, jack needs mounted, cleaning rods need some work etc.

It may have taken you awhile to finish that cat, but the results look great. Authentic camo or not, I like it a lot.

Thank you! The Tiger isn’t finished yet forgot to state that on the post my mistake. Still have a lot to do on it.

The camo looks good and I like the chipping of the zimmerit. Looking forward to seeing how she turns out. Yes

Thanks Gamera! Funny enough the chipping on the zimmerit is the main reason I didn’t like the Cavalier set. It was molded chipped already and would have preferred to pick out the sections to chip.

Thanks Bill and John.

It’s going to be a few days before the next update. The weather is really nice right now so I’ve been hiking in the bush and that’s taking up my bench time.

About time to call this build done apart from second coat of flat and gluing some pieces back on that were knocked off whilst taking photos.

I’ve been in a model building slump and hopefully finishing this gets me out of it.
Still need to finish the commander for it.

Well done. I like the light zimm damage and light weathering.

YesYes Greysnake!  I have yet to screw down the courage to try freehand zimmerit!

RBaer, Glad you like it. I’m not a fan of the zimmerit damage since it was already molded on the resin sheet. Would have much preferred to do my own damage.

Tojo thanks!

Dodgy, thanks!

RG, thanks! This zimmerit wasn’t freehand it was an old resin sheet set by Cavalier that was almost more trouble than it was worth.  I did up learning how to do zimmerit with two part epoxy putty in the end due to Cavalier zimmerit not fitting well. I feel confident enough to build my Tamiya Sturmtiger now.

You did a very fine job on the Royal Tiger. I like the camo and the light weathering and the chipping on the zimmerit came out pretty nice too.

Tiger II, thank you.

Gamera, thanks! Alas my modeling slump is still with me.

The model isn’t one hundred percent done yet. I’ve been waiting for two weeks now for a set of dry transfers for the label on the fire extinguisher and it should finally arrive today.

Finally got the marking on the fire extinguisher placed.

The wire for the headlight was added as well. Still need to glue it down.

I’ve also have been working on an Alpine figure for the hatch. I’m making an effort to try to get better at figure painting. This figure is slightly better than previous efforts. After taking the photo now I’m noticing area’s that need more attention. Still trying to learn how to work with a wet pallet and mixing various shades of paint.

The figures still needs some work on the gloves, the buttons painted, headphone wiring and the eye area needs work.

That big kitty looks great Snake. The Zimm looks just right. Glad you painted the fire extinguisher the hull color and not red like I sometimes see.   Beer

Great work there on the commander! I've been painting figures for thirty years and still can't get there where I want them. You're doing very well there!!! Yes

I absolutely love that camo scheme and that figure is far, far better than average. He's really good!

If you think you can do better, then you can do better. That was the mental approach I took and my figures just keep getting better.

That looks great, thanks for the better photos!!!

Maybe I'm weird but I really like the looks of the Porsche turret more than the Henschel one.

Think the turret looks a little more interesting.
