Seattle IPMS contest tomorrow?

Thanks Glenn. I heard about it at the LHS. No, I have to go to work and then do some things with my dad. There is a show here in Vancouver in June Glenn, maybe you can make it down.

man i wish i could be there. have to work tommorow late. only an 8 hr drive from here. would be worth it. would love to see the builds in person for once.

I was at the show. As always there were some great builds. (I liked Frankenstein myself heh heh) I was just disappointed in the lack of entries as compared to the last few years I have attended. How did that Stug with the whitewash finish? Thought it was a beaut.

The Frankenstein Monster, wearing a green t-shirt with an IPMS logo on it, with his hands stuck straight out with a very small EC-2 HawkEye model on a scale carrier deck it was a great idea!

I judged Allied AFV's so I don't remember how that Stug did. I was very pleased to have my Panther II take third place in the Axis AFV's. Since I've been doing armor for about 14 months it was nice to see that maybe I'm on the right track (Friul's or MK...pun intended!)!

Always interesting to see what categories fill out and what ones don't. Hard to figure out why. Plenty of planes. Auto's weren't as crowded as I have seen in some contests. Armor was bit on the lean side too! Was a fun day all in all.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but Best Diorama went to a banged-up Nascar, sitting on a 6x8 inch chunk of muddy grass, with a single driver figure standing by doing nothing. Please tell me I'm thinking of the wrong model.

Seemed like the car entries went down the most this year. Allied armour way outnumbered German/Axis armour this year. I didn't see too many German tanks, but then that Tiger I took up a huge chunk of space.

By the way, was that your Sturmtiger diorama Peridexion? It was a beauty.

Thanks Hungfarlow, the Sturmtiger diorama is mine. As you can tell, I'm a little disappointed it didn't fare better than it did, especially if it got knocked out by what I think it did. Despite my 1st place finish in armor dioramas, I'm a little bit miffed about the results in the dio department. Call me a sore winner / loser, but a beat-up Nascar, a piece of grass and a stock driver figure standing by, isn't even a diorama, let alone, a winner. Maybe if I was an IPMS member, things would have been different. I wasn't impressed by the third place finish of the postage-stamp sized, 1/285th scale pak 40 diorama either. How much time did that one take to build, about 20 minutes? I even heard a judge ask if it was pre-painted. Cute? Maybe. Assembly? What assembly? What a joke.

Was the 'Nascar' Diorama the one with the front end all banged up? If that was it, I will say that the entire front end of the car was made of lead foil so that it could then be realistically damaged. I'm sorry I must not of been paying attention to your SturmTiger dio. Maybe I'm glad I didn't judge that category.

Glenn, obviously everyone is biased towards their own work, but banged-up car, lead foil or not, skid marks in a 6x8 inch patch of grass, and a box-stock figure standing like a mannequin in a dress shop, does not make much of a diorama. That is all this Nascar "diorama" had. There is little, if any, story-line. I would like to think the judging was fair, but I can't help but see this as blatant favoritism towards IPMS members vs non-members, plain and simple, and not just concerning my work, but as to several other people's models as well. As a former professional model maker, I would like to think my opinion has a least some modicum of validity.

I missed the results of the award announcement as I was occupied with something else. By the time I turned around looking for the winners, they had all been packed up.

Just curious, how do you know that the builder of the winning diorama entry was an IPMS member and who is he?

I don't know how you could tell IPMS member model from non-member model unless you saw who brought whatever model in and that you knew that they were or were not a IPMS member! I don't believe there was anything on the registration form that would indicate membership or not.

All I know is in the one category I judged the builder of the kit wasn't established until after the 'judging' was done and a entrants name was needed to fill out which place they had taken.

I can only speak for myself, noone else. I have judged IPMS and non-IPMS contests locally here for about 7-8 years. In all that time I have never taken in to account who the builder was. I have always tried to 'judge' the model only. I'd like to think that is the case at all times!

Anyway, don't hold a grudge...life is too short!

Because of two ill-behaved and unsupervised 5 year olds running amuck through the show, playing games by poking clumsy fingers in and out of peoples models, (especially mine), I spent most of my time at the show guarding my model. The Nascar in question sat on the table directly behind where I was standing. Therefore, I overheard virtually every conversation that occured concerning this model. It became quite clear to me that the person who built this model was well known to the IPMS members, whom I could easily identify by their IPMS shirts, hats or name tags. These readily identifiable IPMS members, including the judges, recognised this person's work and referred to him by name. I can only conclude he must be a member, because despite my repeated attendance over the last 15 years, including winning numerous 1st place, 5 Best Diorama and 1 Best of Show trophies, no IPMS member at this show seems to recognize me, remember my name, or even acknowledge my existence. I'll shut up now. Obviously I'm way out of line.
