Meng Bergepanther A 1/35
Posted by snapdragonxxx on Sunday, June 20, 2021 6:45 AM

It is time to start a new project. I have been working on some stuff that I can't reveal and also a little time away from the bench, but now with Hayfever season with us I have decided to make a little space in my stash.

I have had this on my list since it was first released and I was recently able to get it at a good price and throw some extras at it.

This is what is in the box besides the manual and paint chart.

That is what is in the box. I particularly like that Meng include side skirts in etched metal as they are just like the originals and slot on to the mounts and you can put on or leave off what you want. It is very much a positive thing and shows that someone at Meng is paying attention. I have already spending quite a while with the build manual and I think that quite a bit of this kit can be made to work such as the main winch etc. For those with the right technical knowledge, micro motors etc could be used to make the winch work properly.

The extras I have chosen:

2cm metal barrel. Not sure if it will fit or not and although the kit has slide molded this, it will sharpen up the armament. I decided not to go with a metal barrel for the MG34.

Quickwheels' set for mengs' panther kits. Makes painting the wheels so much easier. If I decide to do another Meng Panther then this set will fit! I have bought a set for the RFM panthers/Jagdpanther I have in my stash and that one set will do all 3 kits. This proves good value for money.

I am dumping the tracks and going with a new provider which has come to my attention. Available from China Vendors on Ebay and BMA in Australia (who have decent prices and shipping options). this is R-Model and this set is for the Panther A,F & G and is a double pin set which is one up on Friul who provide a long length of brass wire.

In the set you have 3 bags. One with the tracks, one with long pins and one with short pins. You don't need to be a rocket scientist to figure out how these go together.

I have a couple of sets of Eureka XXL Panther tow wires on their way, but as I do not need them until much later in the build then I am not worried. This Ebay vendor is very reliable and only the post can mess up! Incidentally this kit arrived from China 9 days after it was ordered. Some of the AM stuff took much longer but they came from Europe.

I will be using Vallejo for the interior paints and Hataka for the exterior Dunkelgelb. Vallejo still have not released new dunkelgelb paints which make me look to other vendors. Hataka's claim is that their paints are accurate and not scale correct stuff. Meng provide for two variants which have different equipment set ups on the sides of the vehicle. It was common on these vehicles to have lots of equipment mounted and there were modifications to add equipment mounts in the field. I am going to combine as much as I can!

That looks really cool! Makes me think of doing a dio with her pulling a tank or halftrack out of a ditch or something like that.

And the tracks don't look too bad. As you say the Panther at least has reasonably simple track links and they're big enough to work with.

I'm starting with the tracks and wheels. Panther tracks had 87 links, so a decent movie on and off we go with pins etc.

It turns out that these are great track sets and will look realistic when applied. I had to apply some superglue to the inside lip of the pin heads. Only a tiny amount is needed to secure the pins and the tracks still work fully. Just need some Vallejo Magnesium Metal Color putting on.

Next up are the wheels. I usually use Quickwheel to do rubber tyres on armoured vehicles as it is an excellent and much quicker way of getting top notch results.

Prime the wheels

paint the rubber rims. I use Vallejo Nato Black as it is not quite black and totalally matt and just right for rubber rims.

When using the template mask I usually give the holes a scrape with a sharp knfe so that there is no scratching of the wheel    that has already been painted. and then pain the inner part with the colour desired.

I won't be doing full asssmbly until it is time to put on the hull.

Start of the lower hull.

Using Vallejo's Primer it is time to start putting things together....

More next time.

Cool! The tracks look great!

And those Quickwheel masks look really nice. I guess I should invest in something like that. I've been using an artist's template with different sized holes. So I keep moving the mask from wheel to wheel. So far I haven't smeared anything yet.

A short update. More stuff added to the front. There is quite a bit of detail but one one side only! I have left the drivers side hull loose to give me room and I am deviating from the instructions a little bit as it makes fitting interior items easier.

Next up is the finish of the front section including drive and gears, seats etc.

Their okay as long as your going to build a lot of the particular tank that you purchased them for, otherwise it could get expensive, the artist template has worked for me plus it works for many types rather then just one type.

She's coming along very well!

Tojo: Yeah, that's the main reason I haven't picked any up. Other than my recent kick of several M48s and M60s I don't really build that much of any type except M4s. And I prefer to just brush paint the rubber on the wheels of VVSS Shermans.

Things are a little slow as I am having to spend more time away from my bench looking after and dealing with my grumpy dad!!!

Also, due to the weather I can't do any painting so things are halted at this moment until things cool down.

Here are the latest build pics.

To get the right look and track colour Vallejo's Metal Color Magnesium is airbrushed directly on to the tracks with no priming and replicates the magnesium steel track colour.

Wow, I knew there was a powerful winch on those but I didn't know it took up the whole fighting compartment! I'd just assumed it was for crew and tools!

And you're still getting more done than I am... Embarrassed

Back to the Bergepanther. We are getting to the finish of the build and it is always the small bits that take the time amongst others!

This time we start adding the equipment and detail, starting from the back.

There we go for now. I didn't quite follow Meng's road wheel installation as there would have been lots of language.

We are getting to the finish of the build

Amazing stuff.

Really puts my ham-fisted 'conversion' of a Tamiya Pather back in the 80s based off ike three photos in a modeling magazine in stark perspective.

Your skills are doing this build proud.

Thanks very much for the complements. Really apart from R-Model metal tracks and extra tow/track wire from Eureka XXL this is just out of the box. I am trying to add extra small bits of tools as crews would scavange to add bits of kit that would be useful. These can also be found in the kit.

Really it is the paint that brings this to life, but Meng have done a wonderful job on this Panther variant.

Well. The build is now finished. Everything goes together very well with no issues but there are lots of small parts.

I added a metal barrel to the 20mm cannon. Maybe not the correct one, but it is an improvement on the kit one. Also R-model metal tracks and extra tow cables of varying length.

Another build to go into the cabinet
