Canadian Leopard Tank Question
Posted by upnorth on Thursday, April 22, 2004 7:24 PM
I was watching the news lastnight and got an idea for a next armor project.

There was a story about the Leopard tank regiment from CFB Edmonton going on a live fire exercise at CFB Wainright and that it may be the Leopard's last live fire exercise in Canadian service as the Canadian Armed Forces are planning to retire them not that far down the road.

Being new to armor subjects, I'm something in the dark about the Leopard as it pertains to Canadian service. I know its refered to as C.1 and C.2 variants and that they are both derived from the 2A4 Leopard variant. Beyond that, I'm lost.

I know some sources of aftermarket decals for Canadian Leopards, but thats about it.

What are some good reference sources for it?

Are the Canadian versions significantly externaly different from a standard 2A4? What, if any are those differences and what are aftermarket sources to make such changes?

Finally, what are good kits in both 1/72 and 1/35 to try to build a Canadian Leopard from, that is what Leopard kits require the least fuss to get a Canadian variant out of them.

Thanks in advance

I'm not an expert on the Leopard either, but I've got some friends in Edmonton with the Lord Strathcona's Horse regiment. From what they've told me the newest version of the Leopard in Canadian service (the C2 I believe) has a newly redesigned turret. I believe that the redesign is a Canadian modification, and it involves a revised sowage arrangement on the rear of the turret and a change in the armour package overall. Beyond that I can't give you any specifics, but I would be surprised if there's a standard kit out there which would be accurate with regards to those modifications.

Here's a link to Trackjam Models ... from what I've heard this is the best conversion kit available for Canadian Leopards.

Getting rid of the Leopards?!!! Don't know why we baught them in the first place. Better than nothing i guess. I'm sure of the modifications, not sure if there were that many. There was suppose to be alot but the government cheaped out.Disapprove [V]Disapprove [V] I wonder if we will be getting a new MBT? Like a m1 or leopard 2? Probaly not, just more LAVs. info on the c2 can be found here: http://www.sfu.ca/casr/101-vehleo2.htm there is also a link to the c1 on that page.

this model: http://www.militaryhobbies.ca/product.cfm?ProductID=3984 comes with canadian markings, i plan on getting it but i am unsure of the quality.

One thing i know is that if the Canadian military doesn't get more money in about 5-10 years terrorists will have better technologyDisapprove [V]Angry [:(!] Don't believe me? Loks at military technolody in the last 10-20 years: f-22, euro fighter, the cruise missles, the now that russia is a democracy they are using western technology to build weapons of almost equal superiority; for example, the t-90, mi 35 hind, and the su-37. sure Russia is an ally, but weapons can still be purchased on the black market, and i am pretty sure Russian is having a problem whith this.

Thanks all.

I'll definitely be on the lookout for that Revell Germany kit, in what way do the skirts need to be modified?
