M6A2 Linebacker Bradley build
Posted by HeavyArty on Tuesday, January 17, 2023 8:02 PM

I have started another Bradley project. This time it is the M6A2 Linebacker ADA Bradley. It is a standard Bradley with the TOW box replaced by a 4-shot Stinger Missile launcher and an IFF antenna on the right front of the turret. It was used as a SHORAD (SHort Range Air Defense) vehicle in armored units from the mid-90s through the mid-2000s. After the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq started and there was no air threat, all SHORAD was cut to almost nothing. The Linebacker was a casualty of this and all were turned back into regular M2A2 ODS Bradleys. They have not yet been replaced, but a new version has been considered, we shall see.

Here is what I will be modeling. It is an M6A2 Linebacker with ODS mods as seen in the initial invasion of Iraq, 2003. It is from 3ID, 1-3ADA.

312332_496148837104283_492371506_n

I will be building it with a full interior. I found a few pics and a drawing of the interior layout. I was also in one while at the NTC at Ft. Irwin, CA in the late '90s.

The rear has seating for only two operators on the left side, along with a storage box/charger for stinger dismount batteries. The right side is taken up by a rack that stores 6 Stinger reloads for the launcher.

Here are some interior shots of an M6A2 Linebacker.
M6 Interior

I am using the Academy M2A2 Iraq kit as a base since it represents a new-build M2A2 ODS, which is what the M6A2s were built from. I am also using the original Tamiya M2 Bradley interior and parts of the Meng M3A3 Interior set. I will also update the running gear and tracks and some other areas using parts from a Kinetic M3A3 and some PE.

I started by modifying the Tamiya interior floor by removing the molded on boxes on the right side. I filled them in and sanded them smooth, along with the slots for the seat mounts.

I also found a potential issue with the Tamiya floor as it pertains to the Academy M2A2 Iraq kit that I am using for the hull. The Tamiya pieces fit fine in the lower hull, but the opening for the turret in the upper hull and the turret circular walls didn’t line up. The walls were almost 4mm too far to the rear. I ended up cutting the floor into three sections and adjusting them from there. First, I cut 4mm from the floor where the side part and the forward raised area meet. I then cut across the rear floor where the removable stowage panels meet and added a 4mm piece to restore the overall length. This did two things for me. First it aligned the turret opening w/the walls. Second, it gave enough room in the back for the Stinger storage containers.

I am guessing the Academy upper hull may be off as the turret opening is too far to the rear. The Tamiya and Meng kit hulls have the turret opening in the same place and the interiors can be swapped and fit between the two without modifications.

I then modified a couple interior boxes from the Meng M3A3 Interior set to make the storage box/charging station on the left side.
IMG_2280

And I started adding the rack for the Stinger stowage boxes.  The Stinger Storage Boxes are 3D printed items from Shapeways.
IMG_2285

I used the forward wall by the driver and much of the left side interior pieces from the Meng set since they are more detailed than the old Tamiya parts. You still have to use some of the Tamiya parts (shift lever and box) as some of Meng’s are too new, being for an A3 version.
IMG_2281
IMG_2283

I started adding details to the upper hull interior as well.

Next up is continuing with the interior and starting adding parts to the exterior. I will be adding the complete Meng turret interior to it as well. More to come.

Hello Gino!

Cool, another track with interior - maybe I can build one too, some day!

Do  I remember it right, that you have built an M6 before?

Good luck with your newest one and have a nice day

Thansk gents.  It is starting to shape up.

Do  I remember it right, that you have built an M6 before?

No, this is my first M6 Linebacker.  I have done numerous M2s, M2A2s, M3A1, M7A2 BFIST, and a couple M7A3 BFISTs, but not an M6A2 Linebacker.  You can see some of them here:

The build continues.

I added a bit more detail in the crew area with PE straps on the Battery Charger/Stowage box.
IMG_2291

I also built up the Meng turret interior and added parts to complete the details on the kit turret interior. These included a front wall, vision blocks, kidney and arm pads, a seat (that Meng missed), and detail parts from Meng. I also built a radio shelf at the rear of the turret.
IMG_2288
IMG_2289
IMG_2290

I added vision blocks and a handle to release/lift the hatch with.
IMG_2292

On the exterior, I added some PE and detail parts up top. I also added shocks and detail parts to the lower hull. I will be using the sprockets, idlers, and roadwheels from the Oroche/Kinetic kit as well as their indi-link tracks.

Next up is paint and adding a bunch of detail parts on the interior.

I was able to get some paint on the parts this last week.

I painted the interior parts w/Krylon Pistachio from a spray can. It is almost a dead match for US interior seafoam green. We used to use it for touchup paint on our tracks.

IMG_2295
IMG_2296

I also painted the seats and fire extinguishers.

IMG_2299

Stinger storage containers and their racks.

IMG_2298

Various como gear and electronics boxes. The SINCGARS and Intercom system are 3D printed parts from Michael @MikeyBugsGoldberg at Armorama. The rest are bits and pieces from other kits. The white lights are from the Meng M3A3 interior set.
IMG_2300

Here is the Gunner’s Primary Sight (GPS) with Cadillacs for it.
IMG_2301

Lastly, I reworked the Gunner’s hatch to the more modern version which is beefier and has a flat top. I also used a part from the Kinetic sprues for the hatch interior, along with replacing the handle with wire.

Next up is starting detail painting, decaling, and assembling the interior parts. More to come as I continue.

Hello Gino!

Nice progress here! I admire you for completeing several "tanks" with interior - somehow I can't seem to manage that... Reminds me, for a project I bought a bradley interior kit once for "stuff" like radios, extinguishers or lights. Thing is if you wanted the Bradley-specific stuff like the engine or other parts I could offer then to you!

Good luck with your build and have a nice day

Thanks Pawel.  I like doing full interiors; I am a glutton for punishment.  Thanks for the offer of parts, but I am good.  Also, it would probably be cost prohibitive to ship them from Poland to the US.

I agree with Pawel, you do outstanding work I'm satisfied if you can see some white bits through the open hatch or if the Tamiya interior is kinda correct myself.

But I appreciate the work that goes into replicating interiors to the level you do it.

Love that you're doing the interior as well as the external changes on this compared to the basic Infantry squad variant.

Thanks Stik.  I am having fun with it.

I have made a lot of progress over the last week or so.

I pretty much have the interior details painted, decaled, and the basic gear, ammo, etc. in place.

First, a couple parts that I added details to. I detailed the interior of the rooftop hatch by adding the handle and the mechanism to open it.
IMG_2321

I also scratched up the lever that opens and closes the rear ramp.
IMG_2322

Here it is overall.
IMG_2304
IMG_2307

Driver’s area side wall. I added the periscope top to the IR Periscope (cylinder w/orange cap).

IMG_2308

The upper hull. I added the intercom pieces and wiring to everything. Most won’t be seen, but I know its there.
IMG_2312
IMG_2310

The Tamiya IP decals. It still looks good and represents the IP pretty well. You can also see the ramp release handle which is over the driver’s right shoulder.
IMG_2311

Here are the Stinger Storage Cases on their mounts. I added some stencil decals to them as well.
IMG_2305
IMG_2309

On to the turret. I added the intercom and SINCGARS here as well.
IMG_2314
IMG_2313
IMG_2315
IMG_2316
IMG_2320
IMG_2317

I also added the ammo chutes from the top of the ammo bin in the turret up to the lower shelf at the front of the turret. Meng missed these. I made them out of PE 20mm ammo chute from a Kitty Hawk H-60 kit.

fe6f079c243b03e94a43c01753d31fa831e04bc7

Next I need to add some personal gear and stowage inside so it looks lived in. Then onto the exterior.

Hmmm, the seafoam green looks almost like a slightly greener RAF interior green to me.

After some contemplation, I have come to a conclusion. Either the Stinger storage boxes are too big, which I don’t think is the case since they were scaled out properly from TM drawings which listed the dimensions, or they are the wrong type of box. I base this on the below pics. In the pic w/the kids in back, look at the height of the shelves for the Stinger boxes. The top shelf comes to about halfway up the ramp opening.  The racks look completely different. Smaller in all dimensions. The padded inserts look like they are designed to hold the missile tubes without the storage boxes.

On mine, the top shelf is closer to the top of the opening and the boxes go almost to the ceiling.

I was going with this setup as I can’t find any other pics or info on the Stinger boxes.

Man this is really bugging me now.  Huh?

I may have to redo these.  I think I have enough separate Stingers to fill up most of, if not all of the racks.   Hmm

I can always save the Stinger storage cases for a future Dismounted Stinger HMMWV build. Big Smile

Thanks Gamera.  Yup, gotta hate when that happens.  I have ripped out the oversized racks and stared over.  Thankfully, I wasn't too far along and they are a relatively easy fix.
