jerry cans on balkan Pz IV Ausf D? and related questions
Posted by Anonymous on Monday, April 26, 2004 8:25 PM
Hello, im working on the tamiya kit and its not really clear wether the rack for fuel goes on any other than the african version. figured one of the experts here would know. Also, the kit has a steel cable part, but no placement for it, so should i bother with it or what. and , finally, the extra treads... would these be placed on the back of the turret, if so that would be great for covering up that seam...
OK, thanks for any help on these minor matters!

Yeah, I had the same confusion on the fuel can rack in that kit. I can't remember the answer, but I think it was only for the Afrika Corps one. I don't know, it's been a year since I built it and I threw-out the instructions. Isn't it kinda confusing to put the rack together? I had trouble with it and left it off. We'll have to see who comes forward with the info.....

I don't have the Pz IV Ausf D kit. But you know the more I'm reading about German tanks and operations the more I find that alot of these 'racks' where applied by the crews in the field depending on their needs, and, as with most military experiences, what they could scrounge! I think alot of the German armor had things added after coming from the factory. So I'd look to any reference materials I had for some ideas.

Some photo's I have of Pz IV's show extra track links mounted on the front of the tank in various positions.

Ok after reading my instructions for the Panzer D. Here are your answers. 1) Yes the fuel rack only goes on the Africa corps vehicle or the Late version. 2) The Spare Cable, goes on the back of the vehicle in place of the Fuel can rack if you dont use the Rack. 3) Spare tracks were normally kept on the front of the Vehicle for extra protection. Of the pictures I have seen, none of them had the track on the back of the turret. That of course is not to say that some treadheads didn't scrounge up extra along the way across France and put them there. There I hope this is helpful. I built the model about 10 years ago and just baught it again.
