M-51 Isherman kits
Posted by kaleu on Wednesday, April 28, 2004 10:26 PM
I am wanting to build this kit, but I am unsure which company (DML or Academy) has the better kit. I've seen both of these for sale online and in my LHS and they are both close in price. So, I would like to know which one is the better kit. Thanks for the help.

The DML M-51 comes with the complete turret for the M-50 because you need one or two small detail parts off of the M-50 turret sprue. Other than that, it looks like an Israeli Sherman when completed.

I can wholeheartedly reccomend the Academy Super Sherman. It's one of the best kits I've built. Fit and quality of parts is excellent, the kit comes with three crew figs (not the best) and as thundergod said, it comes with a lot of extras to really bring the kit to life Smile [:)]

Both have their faults, but both build up fairly nice.

Just remember with DML you get to deal with indy tracks while with Academy, rubber band style.

Thanks for the help guys. I knew I would get the information I needed. I'm not sure if I will go with an Israelis version or if I can find something more exotic. I have a book with pictures and information of Central/South American armor. I think I've seen some M-51's in the book, hopefully there will be some good pictures. Thanks again.

The best review of the kits is at this site.

http://www.mheaust.com.au/IDF/Reviews/M51/background.htm

It's written by Tom Gannon, who probably knows more about IDF Shermans than anyone else and has written an excellent book about IDF Shermans.

Personally, I have not seen the Academy kit, but think that the DML kit with the Accurate Armor update set makes a great looking kit.

This has been one of my "must-haves," I just could never pick between the kits. I still don't know which one I'm going to get, but I'm going to get at least one of them, if not both.
