panther for GB finished (finally) pics
Posted by Anonymous on Thursday, April 29, 2004 8:45 PM
Well finally got my camera fixed. It's a bit overcast here so the colour is a bit off....but what the hey. For those who came in late:
Dragon Panther Ausf D (Kursk kit), PART PE grills, Schurtzen and fenders. Scratch built driver and radio operators area and comander's cupola interior detailed. Scratched track pins, towing cable and clevis retaining pins, etc.

Insanity item : drilled out the solidly moulded guidehorns on the Dragon indy links -all 198 of them.

Crew basically Dragon 'Tiger Aces' and Tank crew - modified to fit naturally to the poses required.

OOB the kit will make a nice Panther, but not an accurate ausf D - Kursk or later. The biggest problem is the radiator air intakes which are left overs from Dragons Ausf A kit and are the symetrical round type found only on the very late model D's. The easiest fix is to replace them with MIG productions resin items. The cupola hatch is also incorrect for the early D, but this and a few other things are easily fixable.

I bult my vehicle as a late production D. This used the radiator intakes and cupola used in the kit, but also meant the jack had to be repositioned, AA mount needed to be fitted to cupola, debris grills needed to be fitted, communication hatch in turret had to be filled, etc.

This pic shows the filled communication hatch position and general layout.

This pic shows the added commanders direct sight, and some detail on the jack block mount. The kit comes with smoke launchers, but they were deleted from June 1943 production runs so were left off the kit.

This view shows the repositioned jack and scratch built retaining mounts and the filled keyhole in the rear turret hatch.

Any constructive criticism is welcomed.

Oustanding work Peter. Great job on the figures, too.

198.

Very nutty. I can't even be bothered counting to 198.

Peter: Fantastic job , you have done a ton of work to that kit for sure , but the finished project is outstanding . I agree in that you should try to get a pic or 2 of the interior details . Nice job on the figures as well , I like the mud you applied to the lower trousers, very often overlooked , these guys got pretty dirty operating these things, ya may want to get some of that shine of the uniforms ,( it may be just the flash effect) , but other than that they look great . The groundwork is also very nice . Are you going to get in on the stug build coming up in august ?

Beautiful!
If you don't mind me asking, what did you use for the grass (both overall, and the high grass/bushes) on the base?

I second that, Peter. In fact, I think I'm gonna have to give mine back!

Fantastic job. Those tracks look every bit as good as the Model Kastens I used. Better in fact!

Thanks one and all. It was a loooooong process....and the first kit I truely completely finished in 11 years.

I posted progress pics in the GB thread, but for anyone interested in the interior (inferior Captain?) go to my web site page http://www.geocities.com/petbat1961/panther02.html?1083365032640 for the driver's compartment. Go back a page for the cuppola shots. I might finish the site one day too.

Re: static grass. Yes Heki brand stuff I've had for a decade. I use a hand sprayer to atomise a water/ PVA glue mix where I want it and sprinkle it on. Then blow it gently to make it stand up. Leave it overnight and then hit it with more atomised mix. Holds it nice without making clumps. Then air brush it very dark green followed by a misted coat of lighter gren. Then lots of drybrushing various lighter greens through to a very light whisk over with sand yellow to help with the high lights and blend it into the earth colour.

The taller grass is a woodland scenics product that I've also had for years. Comes in single strands. Just grab a few, make sure that the length is uneven, bend in half and snip off to the size you want. Drop a bit of cyano on the bottom to stick the clump together, then glue it in a hole drilled in the ground work. As it comes in a yellow colour. I hit it with a thin green wash at the top to give it the right look.

Build, you got it he is singing! Didn't think anyone would notice it!

Spector, always hard to kill the shine on matt black without destrying the base colour, but the pics are a bit shiny compared to real life viewing. I had to put the model in sunlight 'cause it was a real dull day, and the camera picked up more shine than I would have liked.

Quote Claymore '...but I wonder what Freud would say about drilling all those holes." Hmmm....Freudian slip....Hmmm.....I'll leave that one go through to the wicket keeper.

Now to finish the Achilles for the Sherman thread. Haven't touched it since I went away, and I only need to add the final painted bits and last weathering to go (dio will have to wait)
