Tips please: How do you sratchbuilt a tyre and a wheel
Posted by Nuno Andresen on Saturday, May 1, 2004 8:46 AM

Take for example the Lav-25 tyres. How would you made them if you wanted to make tyres and the thread pattern without having the possibility to adapt a part from a kit donor. And how would you made a logo like "continental" or "good year" in that tyre.

Please tell me how do you do it. Smile [:)]

There are a couple of ways you could do it that I know of but I only have experience with one of them... The way I am going about it for my Hummer is I put two of the kits wheels together... One one I completely removed the tire protion of the paltic part and on the other I made sure that I only took out the rim (wheel)... I made molds with RTV rubber of both peices... The wheel part I am going to cast in resin... ANd when it gets here...Micro-Mark has some casting stuff that makes actual rubber tires... I am going to try that and see how it works out... If it looks half as good as I want it to the I am going to be a tire making foolBig Smile [:D]

Hope this helped a little..

Hi there nuno. Just like what Tom said, the only way you can do this is to mold it in resin or in Micro-Marks tire casting stuff. In making resin moldsyou should have a good pattern to make the mold out of, complete with the brand names & logo. And of course you'll need the resin & RTV mold stuff. With regards to LAV-25 tires & wheels, if you can't do the resin casting stuff, there are AM stuff out in the market. Check out mapleleafmodels.com.

: I thank you for this input but what I would like to know is really how to make a wheel from zero.

Imagine that it was for an OTO Melara or something that odd and nothing similar to use as donor was availliable

How is possible to sculpt a tyre pattern in a circular rim made from: let's say: stock plastic, aluminum, etc...

Use a lathe and turn the shape of the wheel (Less the treads) Ahdd the treads using some styrene. It's time consuming But worth it
