Chieftain help needed
Posted by upnorth on Saturday, May 1, 2004 3:42 PM
Hello All,

I've been in the proccess of packing up some models and my modeling tools in preparation for an immanent, but hopefully brief, hiatus from the hobby. I'll still be a regular here, just the building will stop for a bit.

Anyway, today I unexpectedly came into possesion of Tamiya's 1/35 Chieftain MK.5 tank. It looks decent and hasn't even been startedBig Smile [:D] The sprues are still sealed in their bags.

As it will be some time before I get any sort of a start to it, I figure I can use the time to accumulate some research materials and aftermarket things for it.

What are some good reference sources for the Chieftain, both books and internet references?

The kit has vinyl tracks and from some of the things I've read about tracks from this material, I may be better to seek aftermarket alternatives, are there any tracks made for this thing?

What can I get in the way of aftermarket things for it?

Did anyone use it besides Britain? If so, who and are there any aftermarket decal sheets to represent foreign users of it?

Are there any glaring innacuracies, beyond the mountings for the motor from previous motorized editions, that I should be aware of?

Thanks in advance.

I know the Chieftain was used by several Middle Eastern countries...Iran, Kuwait, and Oman. I don't know if they're still in service or not. I've also heard that Iraq had some (possibly captured from Iran) but I don't have any firm confirmation of that.

Saw this and thought "WOW! there's one 20 min. from my house!" Then I remembered it's wearing sheet metal to make it look like an M1. (It had a minor role in the movie "Courage Under Fire"). Think I can get suspension shots for ya though.

Thanks for the info guys.

Those are some really helpful links, Jon.

Derek: Thanks for the offer of suspension photos, I'll do a bit more scrubbing around the net and pay a visit to the main branch of the public library here to see what else I can find before I decide to take you up on the offer.

Are you serious about them dressing up a Cold War classic like the Chieftain to look like an M1 ?! What a shame, especially if it was done for such a middle of the road mediocre film like that. You'd think they could at least have reverted back to its original appearance after filming!

Thanks again guys
