Achtung: 1/16 RC Tiger I owners
Posted by Anonymous on Sunday, May 2, 2004 6:20 AM
After that debacle with Modelexpo, I'm hooked on getting this kit.
I've been looking around how found an array of differences.
Were the older kits issued with the MF-02 instead of MF-01?
Have they changed the gearboxes or bearings? Some of the Hong Kong websites claim 'new gearboxes'.
Has anyone dealt with the Hong Kong stores at all?

My Tiger I is 2 years old ( don't know if that is "old" ) and it has the MF-01. Don't know about the gearboxes, they may have installed the gearboxes from the Tiger II.
Which Hong Kong website are you looking at ??

I knew you would answer this, I saw your post about having it for two next door.Wink [;)]
Any problems with the older kit? Are the tracks resin with metal pins? Were there rollers bearings or just the metal collars that my M4 came with?
The M4 seemed to have some problems with the earlier kits that they upgraded in the newer ones (they added new drive wheels, even leaving the old ones in the box with a sticker pasted over them) as well as offering new bearings sold separately.
I just wanted to know if there are certain upgrades or fixes I need to look for.

The tracks are fiber reinforced plastic, but I have replaced them with a set of metal tracks from http://www.rcpanzer.de. There is nothing wrong with the kit tracks I just wanted a set of metal tracks.
The wheels have brass bushings, not ball bearings. Works fine, no problems.
Upgrades!!!! PLENTY. http://www.backyardarmor.com have new suspensions for the Tigers, they also have aluminum barrels and metal tracks, and the kits them self.
http://www.customrcmodels.com have reduction gearboxes, GREAT stuff.
I had a problem with the gun elevating mechanism, but I got around that with some micro switches. It would be difficult to give you the details here, but if you are lucky you can find it rcpanzer.de.

Backyard armor was the place that claims 'new gearboxes' which led me to believe that there are problems with the old ones.
I won't have much of a budget left over for metal tracks or a $200 Aber kit. some stuff, but not much.
I was curious as to whether Tamiya has changed or upgraded the actual kit and should I stay away from older ones.

apart from the gunelevating mechanism, I haven't had any serious problems with mine. I wouldn't have any problem with buying a new one just like it, my advice ; Just go ahead and buy it.

One more thing, I did install a set of noice reduction capacitors to the motors. It greatly improved the performance of the Tiger.

Arh Im at the limit of my english here. When the motors start to wear they begin making some radio noice, this can interfer with the control signals and the tank will be out of control, by adding some capacitors to the motors you can remove this noice.
I can't explain it better here, Im sorry. You would have to find a site or a drawing to get better info about this.
