testing the water in the darkside. update may 21/last post before i leave for vac
Posted by fightnjoe on Sunday, May 2, 2004 7:36 PM
ok armor members. i have succumed to the darkside somewhat. as i blundered two of the a/c i am working on and have to wait for the replacement decals. i have started the 1/24 hasegawa willy's jeep. i have just completed the engine and am taking the suggestion of dwight and posting my progress. beware i am inept with cameras on either side.

i will keep all informed on my progress. this is the first non aircraft build in 15 years and the first military vehicle since my uncle bought me my first kit, a tiger one snaptogether almost twenty years ago.

The engine looks fine. As for the camera, I always try to lean on something solid to steady the shot. Any movement when taking a digital photo will result in a blurred picture.
Hope this helps

Looks like you're off to a great start. Careful though...once you go track, you'll never go back. Wink [;)]

Does you camera have a wide angle option? Or a macro option? If it doesn't have a macro option use the wide angle option and "zoom" all the way out. Then physicly move tha camera as close as you can until it goes out of focus. And then adjust the distance till its back into focus. This should let you get in a bit closer and not blur your pics.

Anything good or bad to say about this kit?

For someone who is inept with cameras, you have taken some excellent photos with one! [:0]Approve [^] Great work on your engine too, it is looking very realistic. Approve [^]

I went to a Wal-Mart and picked up a small tripod that is about 8" high and steadies my camera well. Also, a little trick I learned while shooting: If your digital camera has a timer then set up your shot, turn on the timer, press the trigger, readjust the camera as necessary if the camera moves, then stand back and wait till the timer runs out and the shutter clicks. Cool [8D] This will help give some crips shots of your work. I've seen a pretty big increase in the quality of my pics since I started using my tripod and timer. Wink [;)]Approve [^]

Hey fightnjoe,
Sign - Welcome [#welcome] to the dark side!! WAIT, what am I saying!! LMAOTongue [:P]Wink [;)]. Believe me these guys will take care of yaw.
BTW, how is the build so far?? Just asking because I have one of them on my shelf waiting to be built.
Flaps up, Mike

If you would listen to everybody about the inaccuracies, most of the kits on your shelf would not have been built Too Close For Guns, Switching To Finger

Not bad for a wingy thing guy. Cant wait to see the completed Model. Soon you will be powerless to resist the dark side.

thanks all.

dave tried the leaning, actually these are the good shots the bad ones were horrible just a blurred mass.

mike moving close and farther away is the only method available. so far the kit is awesome. the fit is good and is realtively smooth for a build.

duke, my wife saw your post and reminded me that she had made that comment several weeks ago. as far as my ineptness, i took about twenty photos and these are the best three. going to try the timer routine next time. thanks.

mike you will enjoy this build. anyone with more abilities than i will have a blast with this kit. the detailing potential is enormous.

rich the urge to build armor and other subjects is there but my heart will always be in a/c.

new mex i actually am thinking of doing both a tiger 1 and sherman. the tracks are the only thing that worry me right now.

dwight, between you chris, robert, eric, mike, and the others i dont think the urge will ever leave. i can see more in the future.

again thanks all for the kind comments and photo suggestions.

Glad to have you aboard Joe. Armor is kind of like eating doritos, you just can't have one. LOL

thanks tigerman, ausf, build, and erush. i do now see a prob. put the decals on the dash plate last night, no prob, this morning however when i come home i see they have curled up on the edges and i have no decal solvent. i am going to try the "dull coat spray" method i use on problematic a/c decals. ie spray with dullcoat and use it as the glue to hold them down.

Nice job, Joe. My only picture taking suggestion is to use a contrasting background. I've found that I get a lot of contrast and no reflections by using a Christmas red blanket and placing my model on it. (see below)

Good luck with the build.

Another idea you can do for next time: Paint on some Future, let it dry and then apply the decal to the dash. The smoothness of the Future should help it adhere better. Then after it lays down and dries, hit it with the Dullcoat.

ok the next step is nearly done. installed the engine, drive train, and most of the attachments to the frame. dry brushed with silver (was all i had), and flat black (to tone down the silver). i still have to touch up the drybrushing the frame. to tie it all in. but i am wasting time, some pics.

thanks for letting me share.
this build is also in the small afv gb.

joe

had to change host sites. sorry about that.

again i thank all for the kind words.

dwight the kit has taken much less time than i normally take for my a/c builds. wondering if i am missing something.

new mex, that quicksand is tough to fight.

obiwan its fun to dabble in the darkside and the build has turned into one of the best looking builds i have done so far.

jhulk my next order will be a five kit order, one being a sherman.

poiniatowski the kit has been a breeze. i warn you about the decals on the instrument panel. and the exhaust pipe (it conflicts with the drive shaft).

wipw, thanks for the comments.

wildwilliam testing as in putting my foot in verrrrrrrry slooooowly.

jcon thanks, but i dont think little soldiers would work. the a/c would have too many targets.

again thankyou for all the kind words. more updates on the way soon.
