m1 unit markings 4 Desert Storm ?

I've got General Order #7 at work that lists all US Army units (armor units included) that participated in DS. Is there a particular unit you would like to do? By this I mean a unit from a specific location (i.e. Texas, Germany, Georgia, etc.).

Believe it or not, the M1 was not used during Desert Storm. Some stateside units brought their M1IPs but they turned them in for M1A1s before the start of the ground war. All the units that came from Germany were already equipped with the M1A1 prior to the start of Desert Shield.

I can tell you of three armored units that were there.
All of them from the 24th Infantry Division.
3/69AR (my unit, see siganture)
1/64AR
4/64AR
All these unit were also in GWII but they were all with the 3rd ID.

did the 24th ID have the old school m1's, m1a1s or what ?
since the kit is the m1, i just need a unit that was using that version...
how about m1s during Desert Shield instead ?

I was stationed in Germany when we deployed, but I do believe that the 24th ID, 1st ID, and 1st Cav deployed with M1IP (Improved Production). They received M1A1s while in Saudi Arabia.

The M1IP is very similar to the M1 depicted in the kit. The main cosmetic difference was the addition of the rear turret bustle rack that was eventually used on the M1A1 and M1A2. Smoke grenade storage boxes were added on the turret sides just forward of the grenade launchers. The hull received cut out #7 side skirts.

All M1 tanks were upgraded to M1IP standards either on the production line or after they were fielded to units. A straight "M1" was virtually non-existant once production improvements began.

Didn't some of the IP's still have the 'training wheel' on their sprockets? Mine (in the Guard) didn't.... thank goodness... silly looking thing.

It was a long time ago and I wasn't a tanker but if I remember right we changed tanks twice before the ground war started, but I don't remember if we changed before we deployed or not. Major Rob is probably right, but I seem to remember one of the versions being refered to as M1 heavy or M1A1 heavy. Maybe Major Rob can clear that up.
The bottom line is the 24th had M1A1s when the ground war started, but we had a lesser type when we did all the waiting aka. Desert Sheild

New to the forums and was searching for some info in M1IPs. There were at least two task forces that didn't get M1A1s for the ground war. 3/37 Armor didn't get them, and ended up getting a different fleet of M1IPs.  The only reason I know was because I was there. TF 3/37 and TF 2/16 had them, as 2/16 included tanks organic to 3/37.

Been putting off building this one for a long time;)  Plus, it's one of the first threads that Google puts up if you ask for M1IP info and Desert Storm.

Welcome Pick. But  most of the folks whho orginally were in this thread are long gone from the forum now. The (now retired) Rob Gronovius being the exception. But we could use all the treadheads on here that we can get.

Thanks -  this was about the only thread dealing with M1IPs out there, so I figured I'd try anyway;)  I wish I had taken more pictures when I was on them, because they've proven hard to find. I'm looking to do a diorama of an M1IP and an M577A2 in Desert  Storm, as I spent time on both vehicles there.

I hear ya there. I wish digital photography had matured 20 years before it actually did. On one chip you could store  the equivalent of a dozen rolls of film or more. I would have had a lot more photos from back then than I do now...

I deployed with a 35mm camera, a roll of film in it and a second roll, but only one came out and even then the shots were not very good. It's not like there was a photo booth down the road to get more film.

I haven't added any more to this discussion since I haven't seen anything else asked regarding the original subject.

I did take some photos of an old Desert Storm era M1IP I owned when I commanded a maintenance school. It was still in its chipped up, faded paint scheme. I think I determined it came from the old 24th ID out of Fort Stewart, but I am not sure.

Hello, I served with 3/15 Inf. 24th Id during Desert Shield/Desert Storm... Unit markings didn't change after the transitions to the M1A1 in late Dec. '90...bumper numbers where painted over and the only markings we had we a "V" (the the Victory Division which the 24 ID is known) on the front turret glacis of the M1 or the TOW Missile launcher on the M2 and company and platoon ID marks on the side armor....I was in Charlie Co 3rd Plt so the plt. identifier on my M2 was like a sideways V with three dots...this is a pic of a 2nd Plt Charlie M2 during Desert Shield..www.hunt101.com/.../M2-Bradley24th-ID.jpg...M1 Plt marking would have been the same.
