The best thing to do is:

1) Read the first page/ first post of the group build for information.
2) Read entire thread if it isnt too many pages
3) Post in the forum asking the build members what stage they are at and if you can join.

It's free, no prizes, but helps some of us to actually finish a model Wink [;)]

If you are interested.... the Towed Group Build is underway... and there is time for you to start, catch up, and even finish before some of the others.

THE BOTTOM LINE:
If you choose a very complicated kit, it will obviously take you longer to complete so joining a group build late with an easier kit may be the better choice.

Good luck,

Most of the group builds don't have a real strict schedule, but a few do. For instance, there is a one day Tiger I build coming up in August. The idea being that everyone involved will build a similar kit strictly out of the box in 24 hours or less. Most of the others have a start date and a finish date of 2 -3 months later, but the model police aren't going to beat down your door if you don't finish. I've got just a tiny bit to finish up my Panther for the group build that finished about 2 months ago, and I've got a major amount to finish up a Firefly for the Sherman group build that ended last month. So far, no one (that I know), except myself is holding this against me! The best thing is to get in on one that interests you and have at it. The main idea behind these is to have a lot of fun building similar kits "together". Secondary is learning and sharing of problems and techniques with the others in the group, and sharing pictures. Third would probably be that for many, they are an incentive to actually get something going and built. I've learned a great deal in the GB's I've been in, and hopefully, I've been able to help some others over some rough spots. I've found all of the members to be very supportive and helpful. And, I've had a blast!

I hope you decide to join one of the builds and that it's as rewarding for you as it has been for me!

Good luck

Antagonist,
Most of the builds have a time frame,
but they are usually 2 months or more from what i have seen.
also, not all the builders finish on time. Big Smile [:D]
there is no penalty or punishment for going beyond the 'deadline'.

the builds are open to all who are interested, without cost.
i would encourage you to join one that looks interesting.
you may find that working 'with' other modelers inspires
or motivates you to work at a faster pace or sneak in an extra session or two.
or you might find yourself hanging around the forum at the expense of
precious modeling time. Tongue [:P][:0]

but please don't hold out over the 'deadlines'.
they are quite loose.
the group build posts now lose their sticky status a month or so after the deadline, but you can still post to the thread. you just might have to dig for it first.

i have participated in two builds and will be joining the towed gun build,
even tho it has been in progress for a while.
it was a great learning experience for me.

Most builds have time limits for when they want folks to join. However, feel free to contact any of the members hosting the build and ask to join even if it's already under way.

Most Group builds have their own constraints, but most deal with subject and begin date and are open ended. I don't know anyone who could commit a stringent time line and still have fun.
The exception being Mad Tiger Day, where the idea IS building the same kit in a short time just for the fun of it, posting results at the end in whatever stage of completion.
There is no signup or commitment for it, just join on the day or least log on to watch the fun.

I have a question (Duh, Thats what the "?" is for), anyway, when you guys or gals post build groups is their a time frame that you must complete the build in? I build models most of my good days. I'm looking to get involved with the build groups but I don't believe I could keep up. It takes me 2 months to complete my hummers for example. If there is no real time constraints I would love to join. Could some one let me know how it works. you can check out some of my builds in this forum under armour and helicopters. I suffer with cerbreal ataxia so some days its hard to work on my kits but there are also good days. Any help would be appreciated. I'm especially interested in the towed build.
Happy modeling
