It wasn't a formal quiz type post so answer here was fine...
yes it's a Nahverteidigungswaffe, actually from a Stug.
It's the all encompassing Close Defense Weapon, smoke, mines, flares, nasty exploding grenade thing and orange smoke marker.

Sorry gentlemen ... you're all wrong.

What you see here is the external vent found on most German vehicles of W.W.II for the fighting compartment gas extractor (knockwurstfartenout).

It was activated immediately after a night of far too much weiner & schnitzel.
