What Tamiya kit was that?
Posted by Anonymous on Wednesday, May 12, 2004 7:40 PM
Hello everyone, just needed some help. I want to get a panzer 4 that has turret and hull armor skirts on it. I know tamiya makes a kit like this that has the comander in winter gear out of the cupola, but I needed the item number of the kit if anyone had it. Or a website that shows the kit would be nice. Thanks!

Shouldn't there be only one pistol port on the turret?

Sign - Ditto [#ditto] The picture in Armormasters signature is of a very early Tiger also called initial production. They had 2 pistol ports, no Feiffel aircleaners on the rear and no exhaust guards. BTW great picture Armormaster.

Thanks for the kit info Capt., looks like I'll get it.
Hey thanks for the comments on the photo, but I didn't take the pic. Go to google.com and type in "tiger 1 german" and search under images. At the bottom right of the 1st page it should be there. I had a suspision it was a very early tiger that had no gear box or a gear box on the side, but I've never heard of any tiger having no escape hatch and 2 pistol ports, so I asked for help from the best.

It's a Pz.Kpfw VI H Ausf.H1. Notice the missing baggage bin as well. They first started put on the smaller Pz.Kpfw III bins as a temporary solution.
I guess the designers thought there was no need for escape. They actually used the hatch for fighting engine fires without getting out.
At that time, they didn't realize the exhaust would glow at night, giving the Russians a good target, so no sheet metal guards.
It's amazing to follow the evolution of these monsters.

You have to remember that the photo is of a captured Tiger in Aberdeen proving grounds in the 80s and allot of its kit has been nicked or lost in transit from the battle field to Aberdeen proving ground
The scrap man like bits that aren’t welded on and damaged bits were scrapped

The Tiger in the photo is now at the Auto and Technology Museum Sinshelm in Germany, It was a Tiger from the 501st Heavy Tank Battalion

I completely agree with you about lost and altered pieces on captured tanks. I didn't know the individual story behind this Tiger.
But, look at the back plate...there's no mounting holes for exhaust shields, and the dual pistol ports (sans escape hatch) were earmarks of the H1.
The Escape hatch wasn't added until Dec 42.
The Muffler guard Jan 43.
The Feifels are probably victims to loss or damage, they were relatively early additions, Oct 42.

Ausf, I was wondering whether or not the bin on the back of the turret was missing. I wasn't sure whether or not the initial Tigers had it or not. Since that Tiger was at Aberdeen it doesn't surprise me that it is or was in bad shape. They dont take very good care of the vehicle's there. I only live about an 1&1/2 hour drive from there so it is an awesome source for pictures but since alot of the vehicles are rusting some of the details are missing.

I'm sure there's no doubt the baggage bin is done for, I was just stating that the first bins were the smaller ones for the III.
How is Aberdeen? I'm heading down to the shore (Rehobeth) for a week in August and planned on a day trip there.

Great site, thanks Cap'n.

Feldgrau, They have a Tiger there? That's awesome, I thought their Tiger was on loan to Bovington. I knew they had a King but not a I. Now I can't wait to go. Love to see your pics, thanks.

Aberdeen is the motherload of all petting zoos!!!! I live about :40 minutes away and would be willing to meet up with some of you all there, maybe even retreat for some bar-b-que afterwards Evil [}:)] Group Build? How about Group BBQ?

Yeah... many of the tanks have rust on them, but many have also been restored!!! As you enter the base you drive by a BMP, Panzer 4, Sherman Recovery, Leopard 1, and many others in MINT condition after restoration.

I heard that just last year some live rounds were found inside one of the tanks as they were going to restore it.... yikes!!!

The Tiger in the picture above is NOT at Aberdeen but I highly recommend a visit to Aberdeen!!!!!

AND DONT FORGET TO GO INSIDE THE BUILDING FOR THE ORDINANCE MUSEUM Evil [}:)]

Nice pics muzzleflash88 Cool [8D] Im building a Leopold right now.......would love to see one for real.
Its not fair......you guys are planing a get together, and I would love to join you, but I think it would be a bit too expensive to travel half way around the world for a BBQ and a visit at Aberdeen proving grounds. Hope to see you guys some day at a forum convention.

MuzzleFlash I am thinking of going this weekend with film in hand. Probably 8 rolls. Last time I was there was in 99 I think, and I thought I remember the Tiger being there but I am obviously wrong if you say it has been transfered to England. I have a ww2 Reenactment in Gettysburg this weekend then on sunday on my way back I will swing into Aberdeen. Man the things and the lengths we modelers will go for a few pictures of a big hunk of metal.
