D-Day LCM Mk III & M4A1 Sherman pix
Posted by Rob Gronovius on Thursday, May 13, 2004 8:18 AM
I built the 1/76 scale Airfix LCM Mk III and Fujimi (ex-Nitto) M4A1 Sherman 75mm for a D-Day group build. I used the Fujimi M4A1 Sherman to replace the rather poor Airfix M4 Sherman included with the LCM.

The LCM was built OOB, but the markings were taken from model railroad dry transfers to represent a generic landing craft used during D-Day. Lots of putty went into filling some of the sink marks in the mold.

The Fujimi Sherman had the headlight guards filed down to a scale thickness, underside open sponsons were closed with strips of styrene, rear fenders were filed down, and styrene applique armor added to the hull sides to replace the rather thick kit ones. The kit was marked similar to the cover of the Squadron Signal M4 Sherman walk around book cover.

Tracks were horrible on this kit and I took photos that would hopefully hide the bad tracks. This kit comes with a fairly comprehensive interior, although the engine is a Ford GAA found on M4A3 tanks and not the radial engine found in M4 and M4A1 tanks. Oh well, you can't see it any way.

As usual, I apologixe for the poor photograph qualities. It is the best my old digital camera will do for Braille scale.

Looks good Rob.

With a little luck we'll be able to do this sort of thing in 1/35 scale this year with Italeri's upcoming release.

Thanks for sharing.
Happy Modelling and God Bless Robert

Rob, nice work on the kits. I built the Airfix set years ago and was disappointed with their Sherman as well. Thanks for sharing the pics with us.
