There is a newer company out called DML (about 14 years old) that has a fairly comprehensive line of WW2 German armor. Squadron.com has a pretty good selection, price and outstanding service for online hobby needs.
One thing to remember is that there are six basic types of "Panzers". The early PzKpfw I, a light tank developed in the 30s; the PzKpfw II which saw use in the African desert wars; PzKpfw III, their first "medium" tank; PzKpfw IV, the most prolific tank that they had and is usually what is thought of when someone says "panzer"; PzKpfw V, their best overall tank and known as the Panther; PzKpfw VI was their heavy tank and included the Tiger and King Tiger.
My advice is to try a Pz IV or V since they seem to be great middle of the road kits. I will highly recommend the Tamiya PzKpfw III Ausf. L as a great starter kit. Superb build that falls together.
