                        Maybe I've missed them, but I haven't seen any M1A2s in the news coverage of the conflict in Iraq .
                        Perhaps I've been out of the loop, but I thought the -A2 was the current main US MBT, to have replaced -A1s (or -A1s were supposed to have been upgraded to -A2 status) by now.

                        Anybody seen an M1A2 over there?

                        From what I've heard, the Army only has 70 M1A2s online at present. Some are in-country, but very few. Most are A1s.

                        Probably just the result of inaccurate reporting. The actual vehicle/weapon designations probably don't mean a thing to the average viewer. A good time for modern US equipment modelers to get gobs of free reference material.

                        Whoops, I screwed up my figures. I believe the proper figure is 70 of the Abramses in Iraq RIGHT NOW are A2 variants.

                        The first one I'd take with a very large salt lick (forget a grain of salt!). As many people know, anything written by that author is questionable.

                        BTW - http://www.gdls.com/ has really good info too (on the stryker as well). Look under the programs link - and definitely download the large movie file for the M1A2 - very impressive.

                        I believe that the 4th ID unloading in Kuwait as we speak is equipped with the M1A2. It is the army's showcase digital division.

                        From what I've heard, the 4th ID was the first unit to field the M1A2 and they're equipped entirely with them. Would've been interesting to see what would have happened if Turkey let us come in from the north....

                        Most of the M1A2'a are assigned to the "Digital Division: The 4th ID. They are on the way and will be mostly used in the "mop" up operations.

                        There's a lot of mopping up to do.

                        My question, if they've secured airstrips in the north, why not transport some gear (m109's, M1's, personnel, etc.) up there. Less cost effective but tactically more effective.

                        Its a shame Turkey didn't let the boys in. The 4th ID has the IVIS system in its M1A2s and Bradleys. The commanders get an almost godlike view of the battlefield, great situational awareness. The economy of force they would be able to use with this stuff would have made the 3rd ID look like it was going in slow motion. Would have saved a lot of lives, on both sides, as the war would have been shorter.

                        that's exactly what we're doing. Elements of the 1st ID are being airlifted in there. Not sure if they've been in combat yet, but the 64th Armor is being lifted into the airfield that the 173rd Airborne jumped in on.

                        The problem with airlifting is that the C-17 and C-5 can only lift 2 M1s at a time. Under combat conditions. That would be a lot of airlift

                        The unit's at Ft. Hood were the first to be outfitted with the M1A2. Back in 1993, they rotated to Ft. Irwin for exercises with the Opfor, which was heavily covered by the major news stations.

                        Built a Dragon's M1-A2, physically the differences aren't many. Could be internal. From the news footage of operation Iraqi Freedom, I can only see M1-A1s (The A2 could be possibly deployed. Maybe I didn't see it in the news footage).

                        Can someone tell me the differences of these M1s kits?

                        I just finished a Tamiya M1A1 and it went together rather quickly and rather well. I've ordered another, along with a DML M1A2 and a Trumpeter M1A1. I've decided I'm doing a diorama of the 3/69 Armor at one of the bridge crossings over the Euphrates. Its gonna be killer! 4 tanks, 2 Bradleys and a Hummvee or two.

                        Last night on the news I saw several vehicles including an M1A1 with mine plow in what I guess is the European camo scheme.
                        Lots of modeling opportunities there! I think I may have seen an M1A2 as well, in desert yellow.

                        It seems that the Marines are operating a number of M1A2s in Baghdad. I saw several today in both desert sand and woodland camo. I'm modeling one of the Marine M1A2's from E Co. 2nd Tank Bn. 1st MarDiv. Gonna be cool!

                        Revell of Germany makes an M88 kit also. I have never tried it though, but it is a bit expensive... like 50ish.

                        My Dragon's M1 A2 was painted in desert yellow several years ago. It'll appear
                        again in my next page which will include a diorama named "Gulf War II", along
                        with some other armors. But my AFV's M-88 was painted in 3-tone camo, it may not be suitable for this scene.
