BotB M-47 "King Tiger" pic
Posted by J-Hulk on Friday, April 4, 2003 1:24 AM

I finally figured out how to post a pic!

Here's Italeri's old M-47 gussied up as Hessler's "King Tiger" from "The Battle of the Bulge."
Got the urge to build it after picking up the vid for 10 bucks.
Had a blast modifying it to match ol' R-01 from the flick.

Anybody else do any movie tanks?

Nice work. I always gey a kick out of seeing M-47s in German markings.
Is that Jap armour in the background?

Hi, folks.
Yep, I think that may be a Chi-ha back there. That photo was taken at a contest held here in Osaka last October. You can check out all the entrants at: http://homepage1.nifty.com/lefthand/16afv/16afv_page01/16afv_1.html

Some really good works.

As far as making the color lighter in the center of the turret top, I airbrushed all the horizontal surfaces a lighter shade of gray (the base color) to represent a little sun-fading (which I don't think the freshly-painted vehicles in the movie actually had, but what the hey!), and then veeeery lightly misted some thinned Buff on top, but I think mainly what you're seeing in this picture is the lightened Flat Earth (all paints Tamiya enamels) that I scrubbed onto areas where I figured Hessler and his boys trod frequently.

Pop quiz:
Can anybody discern the mods in the pic that make this a "BoB" M-47 "King Tiger?"

Ha...fooled me with BoB. Most of us use this as a contraction for "Band of Brothers" and I didn't think I saw an M47 in that fine mini series. But now that I see you are talking about BotB (possibly the worst W.W.II movie ever made) I get the M47 reference Now to the model J-Hulk....excellent build !!!! Nice subtle weathering on the hull / turret. Great rust effects and no decal shine. Well done !!!
Happy Modelling and God Bless Robert

Oops! Didn't mean to mislead the "Band of Brothers" fans out there. I fixed it. Now it reads "BotB."

Yeah, people tend to hate "The Battle of the Bulge," and we all know about the glaring inaccuracies in it, but dang, I just love that flick! (See my post in the "Favorite WWII movies" forum for why I do)

Thanks for the kind words, Robert. With the great works everyone puts online here, I was a bit apprehensive about posting a pic of my meager endeavors.

You could do a Tiger I from Patton, a M47 painted Afrika Yellow.

Hey, J-Hulk. You could modify the Telly Savalas figure from the Jaguar "Kelly's Heroes" set for the Chaffee/"Sherman"-would make a nice pair of modelling bookends! :) -

Yeah, I have a mostly-built "Guffy" Chaffee on the back-burner as we speak (got shuffled aside in my last move!). The main thing that slowed me down was the stenciling on the side of the turret.
I need to find that Jaguar Telly!

J-Hulk, Greatmodels Webstore still has the Jaguar "Kelly & the entrepreneurs" set for $28.80. Tried to cut and paste, but wouldn't go. Check out the site-good prices and fast service. - Ed

Or why not make the T-34 "Tiger" from Kelly's Heroes? Just a thought
