here's the translated text that went as a caption

The photo shows a PzH M109 with muffler with the military engineering agency (WTD) in Meppen) (photo: Pahlkoetter)

I am assuming that its not a muffler to keep it warm......Wink [;)]Big Smile [:D]

I saw this quite awhile ago on another forum too ..... I believe it was confirmed to be a noise suppressor so that the German military could fire their big guns close to populated areas without getting sued.

forget ricing up your import car, german artillery is the way to go! this muffler will add 100000 m to your shot!

honesty though, what is it? i think shermanfreak is the closest, but personaly if i had artillery fireing close to my house, sound would be the least of my concerns!

an after thought: maybe it has something to do with compression to get more distance?

Its not the sound of the guns that so disturbing, it the "ripping linen" as the shell passes overhead that always gave me chills.

At first glance, I thought it was some kind of water trap to check the shell for striations from the barrel, but maybe it is some kind of suppressor for live fire near built up areas.

From the url of the picture itself comes the biggest clue to what it is. In the filename is the German word "schalldaempfer". Translated it means muffler. If you google the word "schalldaempfer", you will get all kinds of hits for silencers on guns.

this thread should have been a "caption this" thread"
in a new twist of medical study, scientist have discovered that that some diseases can be transfered to metal. Here we have an example of a Paladin with Elephantitus of the barrel.
I dont think its a muffler... why would you want to muffle a Paladin? doesnt make for realistic training if you have to fire from one of those things. Maybe trap with baffels to measure muzzle velocity?
