Acrylic Paint
Posted by Anonymous on Friday, May 28, 2004 5:32 PM
Hey guys need someone's honest opinion. I have been modeling armor off and on for the last 15 years. Primarily using enamel paints, such as Model master by Testors. I want to switch to acrylic, but I am not sure of the best kind.

Air brushing vs. Hand painting.

Please advise.

Tamiya. I like how easy acrylics are to thin and clean the airbrush. Not as many colors as modelmaster, but it is good paint.

I like Tamiya for airbrushing, but it sucks with a brush.

I've heard Vallejo is excellent for brush painting.

There are two kinds of Vallejo. "Regular" and Air Vallejo, or something like that. The regular stuff is supposed to be fantastic for figures and the like. PolyS and Model Master Acrylics are supposed to be good, too. I've used them very little, but haven't had any more problems with them than any other. I really prefer airbrushing enamels.

I like Model Master and Polly S acrylics. Both work well in the airbrush or with a brush.

Tamiya for Airbrushing, Model Master for hand brushing.
According to the MSDS on them:
Tamiya has three alcohols and one ether compound.
Model Master has two ethers and no alcohol.
I'm no chemist, but apparently three alcs and an ether evaporate faster than two ethers. Or at least the types used. Tamiya also has more water by volume.
We need Gip for the answers to this....

Where's Gip anyway? Haven't seen him for awhile. Anyway, I use both Tamiya and Model Master when airbrushing, I have no favorite at this time. I still prefer enamels when brushing.

I use Model Master Acryl; mostly because of availability. I have no complaints with the paint when using the air brush, but it seems to be far too thin for brush painting straight from the bottle, needs to evaporate a little first.
