Captured American Vehicles
Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, June 1, 2004 2:49 PM
I know the Germans used captured allied vehicles in WWII, but i was wondering exactly what vehicles they used from the americans.
Did they modify them? What color were they painted or did they leave them OD? Where were they primarily used? And also if anyone has pictures of any captured american equipment could they send them to me?

TIA

I have seen some pics of all sorts of vehicles. M8 Armored cars, Shermans/Firefly, jeeps ect. Mostly it seems that they didn't take the time to repaint them. Most showed several LARGE crosses painted on them for recognition... I'm sure someone here has some more info but thats what I can remember.

Everything I've seen supports Kennethic's overview of their use.

Sign - Ditto [#ditto] though my great uncle who was a sherman commander has seen shermans in the thin lined squiggly patterns of dunkelgelb, olivegrun, and signalbruan.

I have a bunch of books showing captured U.S. equipment, but the photos are copyrighted are you would need to buy the books to see them...sorry.

Kennethc outlined things well. In addition to those vehicles he mentioned, I've also seen photos of M3 halftracks, Dodge staff cars, an M-10 tank destroyer, and probably a few others.

From everything I've seen, major modifications were seldom made. Quick repainting and/or camo was sometimes added. Additional protection such as track sections were sometimes added to the front and sides of tanks. The U.S. stars were always painted out and were frequently covered over by German crosses. Typically, captured vehicles were only used in the immediate areas where they had been captured (i.e. vehicles from Kasserine Pass were only used on the U.S. front in Tunisia).

Hope this helps,
Robert

according to my uncle just about any allied veh abandoned that was in good shape weapons too
he killed some germans in a machine gun nest
turned out it was one of ours 30 cal watercooled jobs with 6-7 full boxes of ammo
but we did too he said once in a while our guys if they found a spare ger sub machine gun w/lots of ammo the would use that until they ran out of ammo because it had a better rate of fire
so...... i would say any allied veh model you have would be safe to put ger markings on because who is to say your wrong the only thing is you must mark it ina sloppy way the way a hand painted one would be
