railwaygun, etc. build (date pending)
Posted by M1abramsRules on Wednesday, June 2, 2004 12:34 AM
ok, there will be a few people here participating, but I need definate commitments, and a few ideas for dates.

included will be railway guns (like the leopold) and mortars (like the karl morser)

I have a hasegawa 1/72 leopold that I bought a couple of weeks ago and will build it, if the GB gets off the ground

I am not expecting tons of people to be interested, probably expecting 5-7. (I could be wrong though)

hmmm, sounds interesting. I'd still have to actually get one of those kits. How about any railgun build? Im kinda waiting on the Morser Karl on railway transporter, so maybe that'd be something...

ARhh, couldn't you have asked this like 6 months ago. Im in the dry fitting stage with mine and just about ready to paint it. Big Smile [:D]

One thing I have to say is. Go with the Trumpeter kit.

Excellent question. That might finally give me the incentive to build my St. Chamond Railgun, the big French rail gun from WWI. My wife is already senstive to having Nazi stuff in the house. A giant rail gun might put her over the edge. Tongue [:P]

Hey, I've built the dragon kit. It was a good build but there are some errors in the instructions. Also, for those interested, I've done ALOT research on the Leopold and I suggest checking out my other posts under "Leopold" in this forum.

Any questions about the gun, feel free to ask.

Did most of you get your leopolds online or the LHS?
I've been looking at getting one soon, and the price squadron has, even with the conversion rate, is better than my LHS

Seems those problems with instructions carried over to the Morser gun, would be kind of understandable if they were not such obvious things.

Hey, I've been looking up my Saint Chamond rail gun, and it turns out the French used these things a lot in WWI to blow the crap out of the Bosch. It was 340mm, much heavier than the Leopold, though it's range left something to be desired. It's projectile weighed twice what the K5's did! Great googamugga!

We (the Americans) used them too when our guys got over to France. One 340 was nicknamed "Queen Elizabeth" by the American troops.

Ok, if you guys extend this to a 1/35th scale railway gun build, or just a railway gun build, I am officially in. I've always wanted to paint a vehicle horizon bleu. Tongue [:P]

I am in if I manage to win the $170 bucks to buy a Leopold!

Does anyone remember Lewis Pruneau's 1/16 railway gun in FSM ages ago? I used to look at those pictures for hours.

Question: I was reading a hypothetical article on German weapons and they mentioned an 800mm gun. What sort of gun would this be? A mortar?

It wasn't hypothetical. It was the Dora.

Go here and click on the link that says "railgun dora": http://forum.ingame.de/wolfenstein/showthread.php?s=&threadid=21728

And here's another link: http://www.geocities.com/CapeCanaveral/Lab/1167/edora.html

Now that's a big gun.

Indeed, it is. Wish someone would make a 1/35 kit of it.

Hey, just a question for those that built the Dragon Leopold...does it come with a straight only section, or a cross section, like the Trumpeter kit?

The dragon kit comes with a straight section only. No cross section.

d'oh. I wonder if there's a way to order the sections from trumpeter.
I know that Dragon makes a couple of railway car kits. Actually ,I know of only two. And both come with a straight section only.
I believe that there is a kit out there with either a turn, or something like that.
Anyone know?

I want to join this GB simply because I've wanted to build a dio with a railway station, and I need a centerpiece. The huge length of the kit is what's limiting me, so I wanted to display the thing going through that circular railway juncture, as I'd be able to significantly reduce the length.

Zokissima:

Just realize that the gun was either placed on curved track for firing or a turntable.

Thanks for the heads up! I just might end up going with the Trumpeter version. I don't know. I really want the Karl Morser on the railway carrier, but I'm too impatient to wait for it Big Smile [:D]

The US also used 14" naval guns on a rail mount in WWI.

Since this has been extended to mortars, if the morser that I have gotten a start on is admitable I am game. Might be a while before I can get paint anyway. All I have done to it is a portion of the main assembly. Still lots of work to be had with it.

I remember someone posting a link to a model that someone did of the Dora a while back. Thing was huge and very impressive.

Yeah, that's what they called it sometimes. It was the 340. 340mm is around 13.5."

M1 abrams rules;
Would be happy to join you, have my Dragon kit sitting on my self at home now, this could the motivation I need to clear the workbench and start building it. As for date Im flexiable.

Jesse may take you up on your offer to answer question when the build starts.
Wayne I enjoy getting older, especially when I consider the alternative.

I'd love to get in on this one, i have the 1/35 leoplod at my place in germany, but getting it sent to iraq wouldn't be to good and when i get back to germany i'll be clearing out and heading back to the civilian life so maybe we could do another build after spring 05?

How about a date towards the end of the summer sometime once some of the other builds have died down. Especially since these big uns are going to take up alot of space and time.
