The German 20mm guns used both HE(high explosive) and AP(armour piercing) rounds. I guess the HE rounds are mostly used for anti-aircraft use while the AP are reserved for using against lightly armoured vehicles.

Check it out here:

BTW, the P-47 is a VERY rugged plane and it takes many rounds to bring down.

20mm Question
Posted by Anonymous on Thursday, June 3, 2004 11:37 PM
Ok, I am planning to make a P-47 shot down by a Wirblewind Big Smile [:D]. Now, the Wirblewind had 4 20 mm cannons. Did the shells explode like the 88mm shells and 37mm's, or did they just go through what ever it hit like mg ammo? TIA
