Tamiya Tiger I (Late) help needed
Posted by chester111472 on Friday, June 4, 2004 7:48 AM
Hello all,
I am currently working on my very first armored model (a Tamiya Panther A) to practice on, but also just bought a Tamiya Tiger I (late) with bonus crew figures for $33.00...thought it was a good deal so I made the purchase. I was wondering what additional items you all have purchased to build this kit (PE, Indy links, gun barrels, etc.....) I want to go all out on the Tiger and make it as realistic as possible. Any suggestions as to areas to watch out for during the build, or areas that definitely will need to be corrected on the kit? Any help would be great! Big Smile [:D]

You want to go all out on this one you say. Hmmm.

There is so much available for the Tiger, that it would be imposible to list it all here.

Aber has a lot of PE for the Tiger and so does Eduard. Both are good but Aber is the most detailed and also the toughest to build. Here is a link to their web pages. You can also get aluminum barrels from both.

Indy tracks.
There two companys worth mentioning here. Modelkasten, plastic links, workable track. And Friul modelisimo, white metal links, workable tracks. Again both are good.

If you want the correct asymetrical turret you can get it from Tigermodels http://www.tigermodels.com/shop/tmd/7.

There is alot more out there, but this is some of the best stuff.
Be aware that these things can more than double the price of your kit.

Good luck with your Tiger and post some pics of your progress.

Do you all prefer PE for adding the Zimmerit, or using the putty?

I have tried both- using Tamiya Putty and Cavalier Zimm both look good. The pre-fabbed Zimm is a bit easier .

Chester111472,

Monrad is right on... Personally I prefer Aber PE sets as they seem a little more refined if not overly so. I have the set for the early Tiger and it is very complete including engine screens and all tool clamps...

Tracks are more personal choice. Either Fruil or MK are wonderful. There is a new company out there WWII productions that makes resin tracks that are workable and click together but they are sold out of Austraila by mail order. I have heard nothing but great things about them. Not sure if they have a tiger I set yet might be worth checking into though.

Several companies make AM barrels, Eduard, Aber, Jordio Rubio. Make sure it made for your kit though and not say the Academy offering... I have used Eduard barrels and they are awsome (one piece turned aluminum....)

If you really want to go Ape____ then get the tow cables from Karaya. They are awsome and VERY realistic but a little pricy....

The list literally goes on and on...

Personally I am not that fond of PE zimmerit. It seems too flat and uniform. Check out Cavalier resin Zimmert.

You should get the two part article from FSM last year when Bob Collignon built a Late Tiger I with all the bells and whistles.... Its a FANTASTIC article... One can't add much more than he did to his...

Good luck chief....

Oh one more thing... AM parts ain't cheap as monrad touched on. The tank in my sig below started as a 17$ Dragon kit and reached nearly 150 bucks with the add ons....

First, I wanted to say that you have made an excellent choice for a second armor kit.

As far as PE, if you have dealt with PE before, I would say go for the Aber. They are the most accurate and most frustrating. If this is going to be your first time using PE, I would STRONGLY suggest getting Eduard. You also might look at a Royal Models set but they are generally pricey for what you get.

Going for a barrel? Get Eduard!!! remember though, with practice you can get the kit barrel to look just as good.

Tracks, well there is no substitute for Friulmodel tracks. They do require a little cleaning, but they go together easy and are very simple to paint.

You will need to add zim. I would suggest using Tamiya Polyester Putty and the Tamiya zim tools.

One last thing, If you are going to spend all this money on updates for the kit, it might be wise to also invest in some reference material. The best bang for the buck for the scale modeler are the following two books:

Great kit, what's left to add? It's up to you and your talent level.

Hey Chester,

I'm all about applying zimmerit to armor. I recommend you also look at doing your own zimmerit with R&J's "Zimm-It-Rite". You can't replicate the great zimm job that you do yourself. Just my two cents.
