Howitzers and Shermans?
Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, June 8, 2004 6:30 PM
Did shermans tow 105mm howitzers ashore during dday? Was this after or at the same time as the fighting? The only reason i ask is because I just bought a sherman and howitzer and was hoping to have it being towed while the sherman is blasting away at germans. Could anyone help me with this? In this months FSM in the Modeling D-day armorit said that they were used. But it still bring up the question, were they towed during the figting or after they started to un load the gear?
Thanks

Well, I've haven't heard of that before. I don't think the Shermans did the towing, I think that was left to the deuce and a half's. But maybe I'm wrong. Some Shermans had 105 howitzers in them, as their main gun. They were replaceing the M8 HMC (Howitzer Motor Carriage). If they did tow them, it most likely would not have been during combat, unless they were ambushed. I think we need a Sherman Freak to answer this one! Good luck seaknight!

I haven't seen any pictures or read any articles in regards to this.
105s were usually towed by a vehicle that could also supply them.

The Sherman itself was probably far too busy on D-Day to worry about dragging along a hitch-hiker. Not saying it didn't happen, but I have my doubts.
Happy Modelling and God Bless Robert

Although one should "never say never", your combination sounds terribly, terribly unlikely unless it was a specific one-time event (like recovering equipment after a spill). As a tanker, I wouldn't want to haul anything in a combat situation (reverse is a useful gear). Also, if I were the howitzer crew, what am I supposed to do? Jog along behind?

Also, unit configurations would mostly preclude much contact between the two pieces of equipment (perhaps an HQ tank of an arty unit)

A tank wouldn't tow an artillery piece. Without ammo and crew, that gun is a useless trailer. A tank uses every nook and cranny to carry ammo for its own main gun, no room or racks to carry ammo of a different caliber.

105mm Shermans belonged to armor battalions. They provided direct support aritllery fire to the advancing tanks. The reason why they use the 105mm Sherman is so it looks like the regular Shermans in formation. A self-propelled howitzer is a high value target so it is "hidden" in a Sherman.

The 75mm armed M8 HMC based on the M5A1 Stuart light tank were assigned to light tank battalions and reconnaissance squadrons. Like the 105mm Sherman, its role was to provide direct support artillery fire to the light tank units.

The 105mm Sherman didn't replace the M8, they both had the same role, just in different type of units.
