Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, June 8, 2004 11:12 PM
I am looking for some free game downloads, anyone know of any set in the military theme? I have "america's army" but it isnt that great. Even if they are just demos, somthing to do in my free time. I really like driving things such as tanks and humvees etc. Anyway, post me a link if you can!
Any help is greatly apreciated!

Thanks for your time

Marc

Not too much that's available for free, but you can always check out shareware or demo's. Check almost any PC gaming site, and they're bound to have lots of demo's available for download.
www.game-revolution.com has a PC section with many demo downloads.

for modern armour - Steel Beasts (there's a sequel in the pipeline)
http://www.esimgames.com/steel_beasts_gold.htm

for WW2 armour:
Panzer Elite
http://www.panzerelite.com/panzerelite.html

Battlefront's Combat Mission games (real-time wargames) may be of interest.
Also check out TacOps4, a modern arms wargame.
http://www.battlefront.com/index.htm

If you like sims generally, check out www.simhq.com for air, land and sea stuff. Some very active forums and many 3rd party developers hang out there.

Happy tanking!

GO with Battlefield 1942!!! pretty cheap to buy now, there is a mulitplyer demo out there too. you can play single player, but it get boring really fast, multiplayer is the way to go.
for on foot you can be: a scout (sniper), assult, medic, engineer, and anti tank. you can play as the Germans, Japanese, americans, canadians, british, and the russians. you can drive heavy tanks, medium tanks, mobile artillery, jeeps, halftracks, fighter planes, bombers, dive bombers, destroyers, battleships, subs, landing craft, aircraft carriers. and there are fixed gun positions like; mg nests, mg bunkers, defguns (artillery), anti tank guns, AA guns.

A group of us have started a bf1942 clan in the off topic disusion. http://www.finescale.com/fsm/community/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=16511
we're always looking for new recruits

Battlefront 1942 is the best I think so far , if you can afford to buy it , its pretty cheap now since it has been out for quite a bit , granted this game is not strictly armour , it is strictly everything on the battlefield or in the air for that matter even sea , the quick battles are great , everything from the kursk offensive to the pacific battles and africa its a great game give it a try ! PS the sherman kicks some serious butt , I love the soundbytes of that gun on this one , grab one and lob some shells on an unsuspecting panzer4 ! Combat Mission is a pretty good strategy game ,kinda slow going but it is ok , strategy wise I liked Blitzkrieg better myself , it goes a bit faster , As for strictly tank games steel beasts gold is pretty fun to play , mostly modern stuff here but fun nonetheless and hard to beat to boot ! Lotsa long distance shots on russian or iraqi armour here , they sneak up on ya too so watch out ! Have fun!Big Smile [:D]

Just as t3488g said Battlefield 1942 is great! You can enter any type of tank you want, and multiplayer is awesome. There are a bunch of different mods you can download off the internet, modern US fighting iraqis, more realistic ww2 version, ww1.... and two different expansion packs

A couple of demos to find are Operation Tiger Hunt , Blitzkereg . The Blitzkereg is a kind of age of empires type game except based in ww2.

You didn't mention if you were looking for an action game (First Person Shooter) or a strategy game.

If strategy is what you're looking for, I can't recommend the Combat Mission series enough. The game designers are huge military history fans, and they researched the game meticulously to provide the most accurate simulation they could. They've modeled pretty much every tank you can think of used in WWII. Each tank is modeled individually on the battle field, so an AT gun firing at a PZ IV will not have the same effect as if it fired on a Tiger.

The realism of the models is also incredible. See for yourself. Visit http://www.battlefront.com , and take a look at the screenshots. It's absolutely incredible. The game is fully "mod-able:, and many players have taken advantage of that fact, providing new models for most of the tanks in the game, as well as a staggering amount of new scenarios.

Free demos are available for all three games, but all three are well worth their price.

Nat

Edit: added a space between .com and the comma to get the link to work. Thanks to RedButcher for pointing that out..

BF1942 is a pretty decent "arcade" game. There is a mod called Forgotten Hope that makes it a bit more realistic and adds many new armor vehicle. Its set in WWII but there is a big difference between that and regular BF1942. All you need is the regular game and the mod download is free.

WWIIO (in my opinion) was and still is a good game but the gameplay and graphics are very very dated. The graphics can't even come close to some of the newer games out now. I have often said that what is lacking now is a really good armor "simulation". Currently there is (I am sad to say) nothing new out there. That does not mean some of the older games are not fun... its just you can get spoiled. I follow the game world pretty close for new developments and I don't know of one planned either.

Be a man about it and go out and grab a good old gritty WWII flight simulator. IL2 Forgotten Battles is top of the heap right now and is an absolutely amazing game in terms of realism and flight physics. The precursor to that game was called just Il2 and can be had at WalMart for about 10 bucks. The newer version is about 40bucks. If you plan on single player only then it will be the best 10 bucks you ever spent. If you want to fight against others online then get Forgotten Battles.

Oh yeah I think there is a FREE DEMO for IL2. Ill post the link.

Here is the one for the Battlefield 1942 Mod:

As far as strategy games go I think NatM gave some good advice. The wargame grognards are very precise and love realism in gaming. I don't know too much about those sorts of games as I am more of a first person shooter/simulator kinda player. Maybe if I didnt play so many foolish video games I would get my model finished. Whatever you decide its great fun I am sure.

Natm thanks for the link but you need to remove the comma at the end of the .com so it will work. Thanks again

Yes I did mean battlefield1942 rather than battlefront 1942, woops my mistake ! The only criticism I have of battlefield 1942 is the lobbing of shells at enemy tanks and soldiers , now I highly doubt a tiger1 with its high velocity gun would be lobbing any shells at targets artillerystyle unless they were very very far away , but other than that its a pretty cool game .

Battlefield 1942 also has what's supposed to be an incredible download for a Starwars mod. I saw a demo of it on Tech TV. Amazing. The only thing the reviewers didn't like is that you can't get into an ATST and drive it off. They also pointed out that when you kill an ATAT, the "head" blows off and bounces around the screen. Note, not just a bounce and it's gone, it bounces around like a ping pong ball. It's actually kind of funny! It is a HUGE download, like 500 MEG!!!

I wish I could play some of these things. I get sick just watching my kids play. The motion just doesn't do my stomach well!! Sad [:(]

Oh well...

that motion thing got me at first too WIPW , it is almost like going on the most extreme rollercoaster ride of your life sometimes ! Battlefield is one of the only games that trully tests my computers vid card , it still lags sometimes ! Try the quick battle single player for tobruk , the end is simply brutal ( if you are a German that is )!!!!!
