? for Aftermarket Barrel for Dragon StuG IIIG
Posted by wildwilliam on Thursday, June 10, 2004 11:10 AM
I am going to build the Dragon/DML StuG III Ausf. G, SdKfz 142/1 (#9014)
for the Stug GB this fall, and i wanted to see if i could get an AM barrel.
Now, my 'problem' is that i got an Eduard aluminum barrel for my Panther when i did that build and i LOVED it.
but Eduard does not seem to make a bbl for the Stug. Evil [}:)]

looking at greatmodels, it seems that Czech Master makes the right piece for this kit
it is described as:
1/35 czhb003 7.5cm StuK 40 L/43 Saukopf
has anyone gotten AM barrels from Czech Master?
are the muzzle brakes already on the barrel (one piece) like Eduard?
how is the quality?

and is this the right barrel for this kit?
because another manufacturer has a barrel "for the Dragon StuG III G"
that is described as 1/35 el35361 75mm StuK 40 L/48 Barrel
which makes me think that it is a different length.
also, it 'includes muzzle brake' which makes me wonder if it is separate.

of course, i can use the barrel in the box, but i liked the Eduard so much, i thought i would look around.

which is right L/48 or L/43 ? Dunce [D)]

any input would be appreciated.

anybody seen Moses?
he is a StuG man, isn't he?

thanks

I did some research on the web for a Stug project awhile back:

"Stug III Ausf F, F/8 and G's were also called Stug III (40), because they were all armed with 75mm StuK 40 guns."
--http://www.achtungpanzer.com/stug.htm:

"StuG III Ausf. F/8: Armed exclusively with the 7.5-cm StuK 40 L/48. Introduced a new hull design based upon the PzKpfw III Ausf. J and L."
"StuG III Ausf. G: Similar to the Ausf F/8 but with an improved superstructure."

I'd go with the L/48

Hey Ed, I have the same kit and was thinking like you about using it in the Stug Group Build. Are you getting any schurzen for it? If so, which brand.

Eric,
i had not really made any AM parts decisions.
was really hoping to get some advice on that myself.
the only AM stuff i have used was the (Tamiya) links & screens for the Panther,
and the Eduard barrel for the same kit.

so i really don't know which brand to go w/ for parts for this kit.

i figured i might look for
1) barrel
2) screens
3) skirts
but that would be it.
i am afraid of the big (read Aber!) PE sets.
i am too darn slow building as it is!!

I am hoping Moses will see this thread & bail us out.

Hot Barrels makes an aluminium 75mm Stuk 40 L/48, with a resin muzzle brake and a mantlet for a Stug III F/8. I don't know if the mantlet changed between the F/8 and G models; you could always use the kit mantlet.

Ed, I agree about PE screens, they are a must. The tamiya ones for the panzer III should work. I haven't made up my mind on skirts, but I'm thinking Eduard has some. They can be spendy. I really like the skirts though on the Stug III.

I see the Hot Barrels are done by CMK, which is, I think, Czech Master.
(isn't this where i came in?) :-)
HB003 is the one w/ the Saukopf mantlet for the G,
but it is listed as /43 and not /48.
http://www.hometown-hobbies.com/inc/pdetail?v=1&pid=6426
has a decent photo.

having the brake & barrel as 2 pieces does not fill me w/ joy.
the Eduard one piece stuff has spoiled me!

i see Aber makes grills/ screens as well.

ALSO: Moskit makes exhausts!! (about $13-16)
i have not seen their armor products, but their 1/48 aircraft exhaust pieces are beautiful!

i see the AM bill spiralling out of control.
