Matilda vs Panzer ?
Posted by Aurora-7 on Thursday, June 10, 2004 12:55 PM
I'm looking t pair the Tamiya Matilda kit with a sutiable German Panzer in North Africa campaign. I'd like to use a Panzer III but what version (ausf.) was used in North Africa that went against the Matilda MK II?

I've found references to both Panzer III ausf Gs and Ls being used in North Africa, not sure if there were other versions as well.

Anything up to J. The L came into production right before the Matilda II got retired.

Dragon has a J version. You may just want to order one online, probably about as cheap as Evilbay.

That's a tough call. You are correct, it had incredible armor, especially for the desert, but the Panzer III had in later marks a better gun. Matilda just might have won the day....until the Panzer IV -F came to town. Big Smile [:D]

The Matilda's armour would probably give it the advantage, certainly against the earlier versions of the Panzer III. Also, the 2 pounder AT gun was pretty good for the time period. The biggest drawback with the Matilda was its mobility, or lack there of. The Panzer III would have the advantage in that regard.

The armor of the Matilda could hold its own against the 37mm of the Mk III ausf E, but could be knocked out by the higher velocity gun of the Mk III ausf H which had a 50mm L/42 gun. The J(which the British called the Mk III Special) and the L had a 50mm L/60 high velocity gun which was more than a match for the Matilda's armor.

P.S. Does anyone know how to post pics on this site?

Tiger;

You need to upload your pictures to a web host then insert the link to the picture into your message. You will need to put [ img ]your picture link[ /img ] into your message. (Leave the spaces out when you do it.)

ronusmc has a site set up that you can use to host the pictures, if you want. The instructions for all this is in the thread entitled "Re-Upload your model photos!" in the General Modeling Discussion of the General Discussion area. Below is the link for that thread:

Good luck and welcome to the forum.

the matildas did very well defensively especially in the defense of Tobruk. when Tobruk was surrounded and eventually captured, a group of Matildas were able to successfully break out of the encirclement and make it back to allied lines.
