First attempt at a Diorama...... please dont laugh, it's bad...
Posted by Anonymous on Saturday, June 12, 2004 2:38 PM
Well, here it is, I dont like it. It is a 1/72 scale jeep. Maybe my standards are set too high, I dont know, but here she is:

It was my first weathering job as well, so it is a pretty dirty jeep.

The grass, rocks, and road were all made from scratch.

Please feel free to post any comments you wish.

regards,

Common man don't be so negative.... I wish my first diorama looked like that... or even my 5th. Also, 1/72 scale is a hard scale to make things look real especially when photographed. 1/35 is way easier. I think the rocks turned out quite well actually. The jeep looks very nice. From what I can see the weathering looks good.

Its all about practice and learning from others, then adopting those lessons into your own style. Some folks I know who have been modeling for years won't do dioramas because I guess they are afraid of them or something. SO there you go. Your in the game already so just keep pressing on and don't be scared to try something new or what might seem advanced...

Looking forward to seeing more from you.

Marc,
this suggestion is from someone still thinking abt doing his first dio,
so first - Congratulations on making the attempt!

my only suggestion is that the road should have a different texture than the neighboring ground.
maybe a rutted track, or a smooth road.
but something besides the color to contrast it.

For a first attempt that's a very solid effort. As others have said, it just takes time and practice to get the hang of it and learn new techniques. Keep working at it and you'll have plenty of succes. Smile [:)]

The best part about modelling is the next one is always better than the one before. Lets put this in perspective - literally. The pics have magnified the model by say 4 times. So you are seing things much larger than would normally be seen. You need to remember this before criticising your own work.

It is a beaut little dio, especially for a first timer.

The purpose of a dio is to tell a story, so yes a figure or two could liven it a little. The rocky verges could be from somewhere in the Italian hills area, so even a couple of HO gauge goats or sheep stopped in front of the jeep could add a bit of life, if you are worried about figure painting - name the dio "GI Nature call" and everyone would get the impression the driver is off relieving himself ; it also has a double meaning with the animals.

I once did a dio of a jeep with a flat tyre. I had a goat standing on the back seat chewing off a piece of the seat while the Gi's were occupied changing the wheel.....got lots of laughs.

Thanks for posting the pics. Looking forward to seeing you post some more in the future.

Personally I think it looks fantastic--the rocks look especially realistic and natural. What did you make them out of?

I can't really see anything specific that looks bad in the pictures; probably because the pictures aren't very high res. Perhaps the star (is it a star?) on the front of the jeep could be better defined. Did you use an airbrush at all? Getting a good star on there wouldn't be too hard with some masking...or even a decal.

It was a decal, it is just bad lighting there, sorry.

Thanks for all of the compliments, they are unbelievably encouraging!

Looks very nice Marc. I was thinking the same thing as Ed regarding tire marks in the dirt. Nice little dio.

Kenneth and Petbat said it well. It is a really good start, and the only way to learn to make dioramas is to make dioramas, so you or on the right track!

Not bad at all!
As mentioned before, some figures would liven it up, for sure. The dio has kind of a "Ghost Jeep" feel to it now!

One question: what are the two aqualung-looking canisters in front of and behind the jeep on the road? I can't quite make them out in the pix.

Your Diorama looks very good, Marc!

I , too, like the wethered jeep, rocks and scenery. Wild William's rut idea would add realism to it. Thanks for sharing and keep up the good work!

Regards, Dan

one canister is an old p-51 muffler, and the other, well, isnt a canister so to speak. It is a few broken track links from a tiger tank. Just a little somthing extra..

Nothing to be ashamed about there. You are doing good work. You learn more from what you consider a mistake than you'll ever get from a success.

A lot of good points have been mentioned, each time just add a little more.
Love the 'goat' idea petbat.

Well, looks good. You should not feel bad about yourself because as everyone else have commented, there is nothing to be ashamed about your work.
