My JagDPanther is COMPLETED! (less paint and decals)
Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, June 15, 2004 10:03 AM
I just got started on the kit, and only have part of the torsion suspension done. It really works like a real tanks suspension if I understand right. I realized that it also comes with a full gear box, so all I need to do is add my motors and I will be cruising! Here are pics of step number one, completed:

You're a very busy builder! Can you sell me some of that enthusiasm?? I can't get moving these days...

In your other post about this kit I mentioned that Tamiya released their 1/25 Panther with a nice RC unit a coupla years ago. As it is essentially the same kit (naughty Academy!), and the Jagdpanther and Panther share the same lower hull (just like the real deals), if you found that Tamiya RC setup, it should drop right in to the kit you are building. You'd also get the Tamiya indy link tracks (don't worry-they snap together), which while not as accurately detailed as the new Academy belt-style tracks, do a better job of capturing the look and feel of the sagging Jagdpanther tracks.

Only two problems with the Tamiya RC Panther:
1. It's out of production now.
2. It cost about $250 USD!

I'm sure with your RC car background you could design your own RC system for significantly less.

Anyway, looking forward to seeing your finished Jagdpanther!
Speaking of finishing, my Jadgpanther has been waiting to be weathered for about 4 years now...painted, ready to go, just needs a li'l weather!

Check out my nice 'n' shiny Tamiya Jagdpanther, fresh off the showroom floor:

I've GOT to get some motivation and finish that baby up!

Yeah, that is because they do not sag when loose, they just get loose on the ends.... Anyone know how to fix this? Thanks for the comments!

As for work, I have a few days off here, so I can just build and build and build while you guys work and work and work! Smile [:)]Smile [:)]Smile [:)]Smile [:)]

JHulk: you come up with some pretty cool camo schemes for you tanks , was that an actual scheme used or just yours ?, cuz it should have been used its distracting to the eye for sure , I love the combo of green grey and yellow NICE!!!!!!

This thread just brings me back to the days when I last built models...Back when I actually had to slow down the build so it would last a week until I had more grass cutting money for another.
These days, if I can pick up an exacto once or twice a week, It's good.

That and WWIIsoldier's progress makes me feel like I'm standing still.Wink [;)]

Brian, i had the same question as Sean. Did you ad-lib the colors or did you see one like that in a book or something?

Rookie or not, you're doing good work, Soldier! Keep it up! Smile [:)]

If you want some link tracks, try and score some from an older Tamiya or Academy Panther or Jagdpanther kit. As I mentioned before, they're not as accurate as the belt-style tracks in the new kit, but I think they capture the feel of the real deal much better. Can that kind of stuff be found on E-Bay, perhaps? Dunno, E-Bay scares me, so I avoid it!!

For the folks asking about my squeeky-clean, high-gloss Jagdpanther:

Although I have never seen a color picture of such a scheme or color combo, I have read of late war Jagpanthers done in overall olive drab with stripes of dark yellow and panzer gray. So that's what I went with!

I rarely model exact vehicles, but usually go for "representative" vehicles, based on what I know (or think I know!) about the type and the situation it was in. Which is probably why I'll never win a contest...not that I'm sweating it!

My current (long-term) project is an exception: Bovington's Tiger II, precisely as it appreared in the 80's. Gotta have it done by September 5th...ooooh boy...

So Soldier, what kind of paint job are you thinking about for your J-Panther?
Gonna try some zimmerit?

Wow J-Hulk, I can see myself in that Big Smile [:D]
WWIIsoldier, zimmerit is a kind of applique armour that was added to a lot of German vehicles. I'm very dumbfounded by this myself, and I'm sure that many people here will give you a MUCH better explanation about what it was, and how it was made, etc.
Modeling it has become somewhat of an art in itself within the modeling community. Some kits come with zimm allready moulded in, you can get aftermarket kits of zimm, or you can model it yourself, using putty or other materials. As I said, others will give you a much better explanation. I'm fairly new to the German stuff myself (at least the WWII stuff) so we'll both learn Smile [:)]

Here she is, DONE. I need only paint and decals. It came with a ton of extra parts including road wheels, tow hooks, gas cans AND an extra main gun barrel with parts. Lots more that I didnt mention. To me, a kit is pretty much lousy and CHEAP if the manufacturer cant even give extra peices for ones that break easy. Shows how much they care about the hobby.... ACADEMY RULES!! any company who cant take that initiative is BOGUS.

Here are the pics:

Soldier, zimmerit was a paste that was applied to the hull and turret of the tank and used as an anit-magnetic mine defense. Theory being, the mine wouldn't stick to the anti-metal paste.
