Jadtiger "hunting tiger" question?
Posted by Anonymous on Wednesday, June 16, 2004 12:43 PM
What was the main use for the "hunting tiger". what years was it operational and was it another response to the T-34? What color schemes did it embrace? sorry for all of the questions, i just got one in the mail but i can't find any info on its history and uses. my website was out of King Tiger's so i decided to jump into this one as i am trying to complete the whole german tank arsenal from the Second World War. thanks for the help.

Now if you are doing the porsche version then you will need to add zimmerent coating,if it is the henchel then you do not add zimm. The differance if I am correct is the porsche has one less road wheel and zimmed.
Good luck with the build and hope this helped.Smile [:)]

Trailer36,

Great chioce... Is it the DML kit or the ole' Tamiya job.?

The Jadgtiger was more likely an answer to the JS series and SU series soviet tanks. This was a late ware entry... Late 44 on to the end...

Color choices are contraversial at best. Anything from an ambush scheme to primer red has been suggested... My suggestion would be do some googling a see what turns up. Also you could check with some of the guys over on missing-lynx and see what they have. I am positive they can help you as they are VERY well versed in specific details....

Kennethc, it is a DML model. i love their models and am a huge fan of the indy tracks. tamiya is nice but i dont have the money to spend on AM tracks and their rubber tracks just dont do it for me. i like the way the indy tracks are able to be molded to the sag i desire. i will run that google search to see what comes up. thanks!!

Kennethc, it is the DML model as i love all of their models. i am huge fan of the indy tracks and the way the model goes together. tamiya is nice but i dont have the money to get AM tracks and the rubber ones look like crap i think. i am trying to get a hold of all the tanks that DML has for this era. thanks!!

AMEN! I adore DML kits! Good luck with it.

If you want to have fun with the camo then base it on a Red Brown primer or Green. I think that gives it the late war feel... But thats just my 2 cents..

Peace

The Jagdtiger was basically the logical conclusion to the Kingtiger platform, a slightly stretched version at that. It had a Panther engine, making it very underpowered. It sported the most powerful anti-tank weapon of the war, the 128mm. The Porsche chassis differed greatly from the Henschel as far as the size of the roadwheels and overall amount of them. Only 2-6 of them were built, as oppposed to maybe 65 Henschel versions. The armor was quite massive, up to 250 mm on the glacius plate. The Germans tended to turn their tanks into tank destoyers, such as the Jagdpanzer, Stugs, Jagdpanther, Elefant, so on. It saw service late 1944 to the end of the war. I've seen it painted in Dunkelgelb only or Dunkelgelb with brown camo, or even Schwartgrau. At that stage of the war they pretty much used anything. Have a fun build.

AHHHHHHHHHH the beloved Jagdtiger! ,.... heated topic of last month , anyhow I believe the jagdtiger was mainly used against the western forces during the last few months of ww2 , I don't think it ever came up against the soviets , although I may be wrong , very few of these were ever produced , maybe 70 or less ( not too sure about the exact # as I am not looking at a book right now ) This was an assault gun , a huge one ! Assault guns have no real turret , but rely on the machine itself to do the heavy turning instead of the barrel . the barrels can be traversed slightly at around 15 degrees or so , I believe it is 10 degrees side to side . This usually allows a larger gun to be used than would normally be used in that vehicle size . IE the jadgT used the king tigers suspension and hull , the king tiger had an 88 mm gun , that was the max that could be fit into that turret , the jagdtiger had a 12.8cm gun , larger than the abrams of today ! These were underpowered machines that frequently broke down , many tansmission troubles etc from all the required turning basically they were just stationary pillbox type platforms , from the crews use of them at the end of the war . But still a pretty cool piece of german history nonetheless .

Otto Carius was a commander on one at the end of the war. He was the highest scoring tank ace at over 150 kills. he surrendered to the Allies with his Jagdtiger. I am not sure if he was at the eastern front with his Jagdtiger, I think he was teaching at a tank school in the end and then went to fight. I maybe wrong or did I just forget something? NAH!!

Otto carrius scored almost all of his kills in the tiger1 on the eastern front , he was commander of the 512 panzerjagdabt shortly before wars end and his crews did score some pretty hefty kill numbers on our guys in those few weeks before wars end , I still am not sure if he actually had a jagdtiger himself or just led them remotely . As far as I know Otto is still alive .
