First armor in years...what to build?
Posted by knight667 on Friday, July 2, 2004 10:18 AM
Hey, flatlanders. :) I've been building mostly aircraft lately, but thought I'd like to get some diversity by doing some armor models as well. I'm trying to decide what would be a good starting point...I'm considering Academy's M997 Maxi-Ambulance (I'm hoping to go to nursing school in a couple years, thought it'd be fitting) but I also like tracked vehicles.

Anyway, just seeking opinions/thoughts/ideas. Thanks! Big Smile [:D]

Academy's M997 Maxi-Ambulance is a great kit. Would be a good kit to start since it really has no problems and goes together well.

Grab up any of Tamiya's newer kits... They fall together and look great... Their older M4A3 is a great ol' kit too....

I agree with Kenneth. Any of the newer Tamiya kits would be a great place to start. They require the least amount of clean up and slim to no fit problems.

Hey knight, you reside from Corvallis, so you must be a Beaver fan. Good I'm a Duck fan, so we can have a good time ribbing each other once football starts.

BTW, like woodbeck said, the Tamiya Late Tiger I is a great kit. Melts together. It does have indy tracks, but don't let that scare you off. Do you prefer modern armor? I'm not much help there, but anything Tamiya or Academy would be a nice build. Some of the Dragon kits are nice also, but have those love them or hate indy tracks.

I'd pick a Tamiya over a DML to start with. Even though the Tamiyas are more expensive, they are cleaner builds, and the DML indy links are an awful lot of work.

If you are into some light armor of jeeps, go with Academy's M3A1, Academy's Honey, or Tamiya's MUTT M151A2.

A club member friend of mine cannot stop talking about how great the M3's are (now he's
up to building 10 in different stages). I'm on MUTT #3. If you can fill injector pin marks,
this kit will treat you well.

As all above have said, the newer Tamiya kits are wonderful. As we say in the club:

"Cut open the bag and dump out the parts. You'd be surprised if the kit didn't build itself."

I hope you enjoy the armor world.
