Tamiya 1/16 Tiger I Interior Detail
Posted by Anonymous on Friday, July 2, 2004 11:21 AM
Greetings All,

I'm just getting back into armor modeling after an absence of twenty years. Getting ready to start on a static display of a 1/16 Tamiya Tiger I. I love this scale because of the opportunities for detailing. Earlier this year, I spent a day at the Bovington Tank Museum in the UK photographing their Tiger I from every angle. By the way, this is the full-scale Tiger from which the Tamiya scale model was copied.

I also have all the Aber photoetch and the metal tracks and am hoping to build what will be a truly striking static display model.

The only problem is the absence of interior detail for this particular model. I realize that since it was intended to accomodate the machinery for RC, any sort of extensive interior detailing wouldn't be practical. However, I'd like to have at the very least a breech for the gun so that when you look through an open hatch there will be something inside and not just an empty void.

My question is, has anyone out there had any experience scratch building an 88 gun breech in this scale? If so, I'd welcome any advice you have to offer. Are there any kits out there that I might be able to bash for parts?

Finally, are there any other detail freaks like me out there or am I a total eccentricQuestion [?]

First off, Seventrs, Welcome to the Armor Forum.
You're are not eccentric, there's a lot of attention to detail and accuracy here as well as a lot of fun.
You'll find a lot of help on research for this, but I think your Bovington experience will serve you the best of all.
Congrats on the Tiger I. I think most here have dealt with the RC version so you may be on your own in terms of the interior. Many have done some beautiful interior jobs on the Tiger I but I think they're all 1/35.
I'm sure someone will be along for more info...

Welcome to FSM!
Looking forward to seeing your ambitious project. I have the static kit and Aber set too, but have no plans to pursue any interior construction.
Actually, I've been having a hard enough time starting any construction at all! It's been on top of my "to do" list for over a year...but I just haven't had the gumption yet to dive into that monstrous project.
There are several other fellas here who have worked on that brute and can offer you some good advice, I'm sure.

No comment Brian... Wink [;)] Big Smile [:D]

Seventrs, I've started my Tiger with the full Aber set but am suffering from a case of photoetch poisioning Wink [;)] and will return to the build soon. I have not seen any aftermarket interior parts for that kit and I stopped looking so I could keep my sanity. There is a group build thread that we started a while back if you want to check it out. Here's the link and it's in the Group Builds Forum too.

Good luck, keep us posted on your progress.

Greetings Snap-together! I got my metal tracks from a guy in Hong Kong named Kenny Chong. Don't if he's still in business. Did a search and came up with nothing. However, metal tracks and other metal parts for 1/16 and 1/15 scale tanks are available from Backyard armor.

http://www.backyardarmor.com

They aren't cheap (close to US $200 for a complete set), but they are absolutely perfect in every detail, even to the small, angled cleats, which, incidently, are not included in the tamiya plastic tracks. I compared mine to the pics I took of the full-size ones in the Bovington museum, and couldn't find anything to criticize. They come in white metal and require quite a bit of prep work to get a weathered look, but once completed, they look great!
Currently, I'm on the lookout for some substance that I can use to simulate compacted soil in the indentations. If anyone has any recommendations, let me know.

Thanks heaps for the assistance, you are one of the lucky ones being able to see a Tiger in the flesh, oneday when the kids leave home......as for mud in the tracks i used to use a mix of pva, fine sand(for 1/35..)and plaster of Paris, saw dust and shades of brown acylic paint, plus the usual weathering, might take a bit of experimentaion, but some of my 1/35 gear i did 20 years ago is still holding together.....with the interior, Murphy's law says just as you finish it, some company will offer a resin /PE kit for it........or better still start your own buisness, i'm sure you might make a small fortune if done correctly...actually now there's an idea....hmmm, something else to put on the list.............See ya ,gotta go to work.
