Looking for Info on M Whitmann's Tiger !
Posted by chazsmith on Sunday, July 4, 2004 4:06 PM
Hey Guys;

A friend of mine asked me if I could help him find some info/pictures of Michael Whitmann's first Tiger I since he want's to build a model of it. I've already looked through all the references I have and can't find anything. I have the Late Model 1/35th Tamiya kit which has decals for his last Tiger. Does anyone know what 1/35th scale kit would be needed to build his first Tiger and the markings/colorations it should have. Also, where my friend could get the decals if they don't come in the kit.

ThanksSmile [:)]

I believe his first Tiger was the one he had at Kursk. If this is so it's an early production Tiger. Base color is dark yellow with green and brown. Wittman commanded tank #1313, with the first 13 being larger then the second 13. If you have the squadron book Tiger in action thats Wittmans tiger on the front, the one flying the German national flag.

S04 was painted this way for propaganda reasons when Wittman was awarded his swords and oakleaves to the knights cross and does not represent the way in which Wittman fought. The first release Tamiya Tiger (1970's era) had these decals included in the kit.

Whittman's first Tiger was actually his training vehicle. Even when trained on the tiger, he went back to Russia at the end of 1942 and commanded a Panzer 3 Ausf J of the Leibstandate's light panzer 4th Company. He did not get a tiger until April 1943, months later, when 5 new vehicles were assigned to the front. Therefore his first combat vehicle was an early 1943 build.

Hope this helps you out some.

I've got the hardbound "Tiger Ace" a translated autobio of Wittman. It is an excellent book with many anecdotes and reference photos. But, Peter gave you the info and I don't have to dig the book out !

Guys:

Hi! Thanks for the all the input on his tank! I'll pass it all onto my friend - there's lots of good stuff for him to check into. It's got me interested too, I might build one for myself once I'm finished with the other 2 tanks I have on the table.

Thanks

Charlie
