No actually....that's the actual paper napkin you're looking at. I took some napkins from a restaurant that had a patterned edge that I thought would look good. (I'd been thinking about this for awhile) I trimmed a small section and used the napkin edge as my straight edge (especially for the sides of the metal hull). On the plastic section I brushed liquid cement on which softened the plastic... I pressed the napkin into the cement and trimmed where needed with a fresh razor blade. I did the same on the metal hull and the primer softened enough to hold the napkin in place. So what you're seeing as zimmerit is the edge of the paper napkin glued into place

I thought that was it but the liquid cement didn't make a strong enough bond- the napkin had no bond to the surface under it... so I saturated the napkin with liquid CA. It soaked through readily enough... Once it dried it was just as hard as putty.. and I trimmed it away from the tools on the right-hand side of the hull. I spray painted it with Andrea acrylics..(also a first time use).

lilBEAR,
Zimmerit was a non-magnetic paste that the Germans applied to the vertical surface
of their AFV's for a period of time (after the Barbarossa offensive started until the
retreat back westward began)
its purpose is to prevent magnetic mines from sticking to the hull.

i think Chief has captured the textured appearance of the Zim
by putting CA on the kit and stippling it w/ the edge of a napkin.

and done a fine job of it too!

Chief, is my guess at the technique correct?
if not, can you give us more of a play by play?
did you use thick gap filling CA?

Hello Fellas,
I've never built a tank, but yours sure looks great, Chief!!! Thumbs Up [tup]Thumbs Up [tup]Thumbs Up [tup]Thumbs Up [tup]Thumbs Up [tup]
Now obviously I am missing something here!! Zimmerit is a type of putty! Right?
Now how does one apply it!! I'm thinking you scraped out of flat layer and then put dents in it with the "paper napkin"? How does that work? What scale is it?
Cool [8D]Cool [8D] Thanks!!! Cool [8D]Cool [8D] Cheers!!! Cool [8D]Cool [8D]

There was an article about it in the 80's in FSM on dead tree. I think it works best in 1/72 since the scale is appropriate for something so fine.

Chief - doesn't look like your server allows diect linking. You may have to set the pics up on Ron's site or photobucket befor you can post direct to a thread. See the 'how to' topics on the FSM site for ways to do it.

Here's a few pics of the zimmerit applied to the Tiger components. I used the edge of a paper napkin applied with CA
