German 88mm Gun
Posted by kwags on Wednesday, July 7, 2004 10:32 PM
I'm looking to build a German 88 mm gun. Is there a kit out there or do I a subject for my first scratch build?

Tamiya do a 88 Flack gun and AFV Club will be bringing a 88 Flack gun out
AFV Club also do a 88 Pak (anti tank) gun

Kwags, as John says, AFV Club have a Pak 43/41 8.8cm anti-tank gun out already. It has a turned Aluminium barrel and pre shaped Brass shields and is a real nice kit. You can also get a separate kit of rounds for it and a separate accessory kit of brass spacers for the shields. See a review at:
http://pmms.webace.com.au/reviews/vehicles/afvclub/afv35059.htm

AFV plan to release a 88mm Flak 18 sometime late this year early next year. A pic of the box top for this kit can be seen at:
http://pmms.webace.com.au/newkitnews/newf.htm

Tamiya's offering is the different Flak 36 version, and while a bit dated is still okay by some manufacturers standards.

I had thought of using the afv barrel on the tamiya kit, but by the time I went to get afv kit they were all gone. I therefore dont know if they are compatible?

Roco Minitanks has a Flak 36/37 in 1/87: item 740

Note that the English verson of the International Importers page is busted - you've got to use the German one (should be understandable enough)

Hi
As per the posts above, the most easy to find kit of the 88 is the Tamiya offering.
AFV club will be releasing one sometime soon.
Verlinden has offered theirs in 1/15 for some time, and if you still want to stick to 1/35 there is the recently issued Calibre 35 resin offering:

The Verlinden gun is supposed to be quite a bear to build up with lots of problems and overly thick parts. The Caliber 35 sounds like it's presently the best kit out there, though the AFV Club may be nice too -- it'll surely be cheaper.

Personally, I'd wait for the AFV kit to come out, that way you get the aluminum barrel and brass shield. The Tamiya kit is old, but it still builds up to a nice kit.

Here in nz verlinden costs an arm and both legs, so, for me it is out of the question.
Who are calibre 35 .They are not known to me . The afv pak looked good from what I remember, but the Tam. is at least the flak type. Does any one know of good research sites for same? most found so far show rather sad looking examples, with bits missing, or generally poor condition.

Try:

On this page are links to pics of 3 different Flak 36's (and the IWM one but forget that) as well as a Flak 18 and numerous other guns.
