something very important to me
Posted by fightnjoe on Friday, July 9, 2004 12:39 AM
as some of you know i have had something very emotional planned. i had planned to keep it out of the forum until i had finished it but some things have changed in my life since that point. i needed something to take my mind off of them. so here it begins. the kit is the italeri 1/35 usmc sherman. i am building something a little different than the box art. i am doing an army sherman from okinawa. this sherman will be the centerpiece of a diorama. more on that later.

i started this build on july 6, first thing up was cleaning up and painting the road wheels. then i mated them with the suspension pieces. then dry brushed the assembly with tamiya aluminum as it seems it will be difficult to do this later in the build.

after that i finished the individual assemblies and drybrushed the entire assembly with the aluminum.

after this was dry i attached them to the hull.

next up will be the drybrushing of the hull and a subtle wash.

i will keep all updated with this build. i would be in grave error if i didnt thank some people for their help in researching this. robert, dean(scubaboy), and rob(lobbie) each have been incredibly helpful. i would not have gotten anywhere on this without their help.

Joe, I don't know what happen to you but it's a good way to take you mind off of bad things. I lost a lot of things this year (some very important, some less important) but after a little break on my 1/16 Tiger I've been working on it since a couple of weeks.

Good job with the Sherman until now, let us see more pics of progess...

Hope things get better for you Joe.

This may be a silly question to some, but I'm curious why you drybrushed with the aluminium?

Its looking good Joe. When things aren't going good I tend to gravitate to either running or model building. Of course the model building is less energy consuming. HEHE

Hang in there, Joe!
Your Sherm's looking good so far. My only suggestions at this stage would be to build the whole thing before painting anything. You may also want to reconsider the color you are drybrushing with...I'd go with a lighter shade of the base color instead of aluminum.
Just suggestions, of course! We all do things differently.

Keep us posted on your progress!

rob, matthias, matt, peter, rich, j-hulk thanks. i really appreciate the kind words. the personal stuff is a good/bad situation and i am waiting to see how it sorts out. but the building is the best distraction i can come up with. i painted the suspension and then drybrushed because looking at the instructions it seemed at least that subsection would be difficult to paint after the whole was done. i am going to assemble the upper hull and turrent and then spray and weather them.

i used aluminum because it is the closest i have to the steel i assume they were made of. i want a well worn suspension. the upper hull i am going to try something that dwight suggested for figures.

again thanks all for the kind words.

You make me want to dabble with the Sherman. I fear it because so many people bring them to competitions. Nice work. I really like your drybrushing work.

Joe, I hope eveything works out for you. Your build looks excellent, you are becoming a true Darksider.
To be honest, I wasn't sure if I was going to be a part of this anymore, Haven't had a look for little while, but I can't not respond to someone who has done so much for feel of this place (even a flyboy). Now I believe the 'feel' will continue.
Good Luck, we're behind you, my friend.

I am a new member, but from the threads I have read I am very humbled with the comradrie you guys have shown. Joe life is like a box of choclates , sometimes you get a flavor that taste bad in your mouth. I think that models can bring out the good in everyone its almost a state of meditation I am a 22 year old student my dad introduced models to me at a young age after a 7 year hiadus I found my passion again and Ive never been happier. Sorry for the story I wish you all well.
