After market tank treads
Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, April 15, 2003 10:57 PM
Hey ya'll,
I'm finishing up my first Sherman (painting ammo boxes, ration boxes, oil cans ect.) and I put on the treads that came from the kit, but they dont hang right. The treads don't lay down on the top rollers above the road wheels. So i was wondering how I can get my hands on some after market metal treads for this tank? I plan on taking pics and posting them to see what you all think of my work but I want it to be perfect in my mind berfore I do that.
Also I would like some tips on how to mix together a good khaki color for the american soldier figures included in the kit. All help will be apreciated.
Thanks

Let me guess...it's an Italeri kit. The best thing that you can do with the existing tracks that you have is glue them down to the top of the returns. Just lift the track up a touch, a little dabble of CA glue, press them back down and that's a rap.
As far as AM tracks go, there are a couple of different manufactures that prodece some nice Sherman tracks. RHPS and Fruilmodellisimo come to the forfront of my mind. I haven't used RHPS tracks yet but I have heard some great things about them but I have used Fruil and they are great. Check some of the on-line shops for these products unless your local shop carries them.
I don't paint figures anymore but Tamiya has Khaki and Khaki Drab in their acrylic line. But a lot of figure painters will not use acrylics because they dry too fast.

Actually it is a tamiya kit. Ive built their m42 duster kit and the treads fit perfectly. I kind of want to avoid the glueing option if at all possible. I'll check out my hobby shop and see if they can order one of those am tracks that you mentioned. Thanks for the info.

Hmmm... never really had trouble with Tamiya's Sherman tracks laying down but it's not out of the realm of possibilty. Prices vary on which country you're in.

You can try Discount Models for RHPS tracks and Chesapeake Model Designs for Fruil tracks.

I am not a big Allied Armor fan, and mainly focus on German Armor...but many Shermans that I have seen entered in shows use AFV's individually linked tracks. They look great. But I personally recommend either Fruil Tracks or Model Kasten Workable tracks.
