Can't speak to the T 35 issue, but many soviet designs either didn't have a turret floor or had only a partial floor so the loader would have to follow the gun around to service it and of course to avoid injury.

I've heard that the Soviet Red Army tank commanders (on the T-35 -37s?) would have to duck to avoid being decapitated when the turret turned. In other words, his bucket seat was not a part of the turret mechanism. Is this true?
