Panther Feedback.
Posted by Anonymous on Saturday, July 17, 2004 4:19 PM
Just wanted to see if I could get some feedback about my first zimm'd German kitty. It's final destination is a diorama where it will sit abandoned in a ditch road side as some GIs march past. Supposed to be an early A from the Anzio area. Anyhow, just wanted to see what you guys thought of it so far, and to see if you had any suggestions for improvement before I finish of the weathering and start belting on all the odds and ends.

Looks great so far, especially the zimmerit! I have yet to work up the courage to attempt making my own zimmerit, one of these days I will make the leap and I hope it looks as good as yours does! Thumbs Up [tup]

Helluva job man. I like the chipping a lot. It seems a bit thick in places but overall VERY well done... congrats

That is excellent. You've done a great job capturing the look of worn and beaten zimmerit.
Keep us posted with your progress!
Looking forward to seeing the finished diorama.

Thanks guys. The model is Dragon's 1/35th Early A. I guess I'll stay the course, and nail on some battered Schurzen and the tracks and wheels. The wheels and skirts are mostly done, and I'm drilling out the kit's solid guide horns one by one. Not fun, but I think it will look better. For those more knowledgeable, if a Panther slipped a track would it be likely to "drive off" the track entirely, or would it just come partially off before the crew halted?

Frankly, I'm really quite excited that you guys mostly like the zimm. For those out there who haven't tried zimm, I was just as nervous. I decided one day to just go for it, and wracked my brain for something non-toxic, water soluble, and slow to dry. I came to the conclusion that super lightweight wall patch stuff (it dries kind of like foam) would fit the bill. I thinned it with the old MK I finger, and then spread it out from the middle with a large, stiff wet brush. After it's applied, and set for about 2 hours, you can score it w/ an Xacto. And, the bonus is, it's sandable, completely removable with little work (even when dry), and chips off very controllably. I tend to think I left it a little thick in places as well, and I've sanded down some of the "chunkier spots" since these photos were taken. Overall though, despite the the contrasting textures being a little "over the top" in terms of scale I am pretty satisified with the results to the eye.

Very nice Monktrade. Nice little technique you derived for this particular zim. It looks a tad thick from the pictures but for a first time, I'd say you did a great job. I have found it much easier to use 2 part Polyester or 2 part epoxy putty to simulate the zim. Thanks for sharing and look forward to more pics.

Cheers

Looks very impressive. I would agree with Moses and Kennethc that the zim application is a little thick. Here is what that tank looked like before it was destroyed and in the ditch!
This zim is eduard PE before and after. For future reference this is the proper thickness that you should be going for. I had to spend the $10 bucks on the PE because I couldn't replicate the proper thickness with putty etc.

Your Panther looks great! Thanks for the reference photos! I would have tried AM stuff, but I really wanted to capture the beat up look of straight up tile zimmerit. Trying for this look here:

I definately prefer applying my own zimm.

The PE zimm, IMO, just doesn't look real for some reason...maybe too uniform?

Great job on your first Zimm application. WIsh my 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and fourth looked that good!
