the bailey bridge was a special bridge that was designed by the Allies in WWII. it was a flat steel gertter structure, which was pre-assembled in sections, and which could then be quickly put together by field engineers. it could be used to cross small creeks and such, or could be rrested on pontoons to cross rivers.

the bailey bridge is a highly effective design, which I believe is still in use to this day. I think the U.S. Army still has some for its own use, and some are even in the hands of private contractors. In fact, when they were rebuilding a state road through my town, they used the bailey bridge as a temporary span over a wide creek, while they built a more permenant structure.

a bailey bridge is almost entirely made from lenghts of steel, along with a corrogated road top. this makes it fairly easy to replicate using strip and sheet styrene.

And now after saying all that, I have no idea what the plans are for it. sorry pbrull, but never fear someone should come along and help a bit better than I.

Thanks Matt, I feel more informed now. I think I know something about what your talking about. I guess I never knew it had a name.

I believe the movie Kelly's Hero's showed what appeared to be a bailey bridge including the high speed tractors that towed the disasembled piece's . Not much screen time but it may give you the over all image to start constructing one from scratch. Good luck !

I find it amazing that these bridges are still being built and used. Sir Baily sure came up with a good one when he invented this!

It can be surprising to see certain engineering designs last as long as they do. It's the old if-it-ain't-broke-don't-fix-it approach. The military in particular use this (sometimes) as evidenced by such long-lived platforms as the C-130 and the B-52, both of which are now 40-50-year-old designs. Nothing better has come along to replace them, so they soldier on. Same is true for the bailey design.
